Keep a Home Inventory Checklist Just In Case

For most of us, we won’t have to experience a disastrous home loss such as a flood, fire, earthquake or other disaster. That doesn’t mean any of us should be less prepared for such an event should one occur. Preparing a home inventory can be a large task, but taking the time to do so can make a difference of thousands of dollars when it comes to your claims settlement as well as simple ease of processing your claim. Ever Wonder What Celebrities Insure? You Might Be Surprised.

When it comes to the insurance world, you can pretty much insure anything. There are companies that insure things for the obvious insurance reasons of liability, but also some that take risks on things like how much snow will fall in the mountains for a ski resort. Continue Reading...

Thanks to you, our customers!

We continued to grow in 2015 because of your strong support. Our greatest source of new business continues to be referrals. Oh sure, we promote our website and do a little advertising here and there, but it’s people like you that keep us going.

Because of your strong support and recommendations, we’ve been able to give back to the community. In 2015 we gave to: Anacortes Salmon Derby Scholarship Fund; Aaron Brooks Foundation; Susan Komen Foundation; Cancer Lifeline of Seattle; Kirkland Boys and Girls Club; Children’s Hospital and we donated over $1,800.00 to the American Lung Cancer Association. Because of your great referrals, not to mention we truly love giving back to our community, we will continue our referral program in 2016. Please remember any referral you send our way, we’d like to include you in our “Help Our Community” referral program. For every referral we receive we will send you a Starbucks’s coffee card for $5.00; and donate $10 to the American Lung Cancer organization.

The person you refer doesn’t have to purchase a policy. There are many worthy charitable organizations in our community. Help us, help them! Our referral program is open to anyone, whether they’re a client or not.

WHY SO MUCH?!

I hear that a lot when talking to customers about adding their TEEN DRIVER to their Auto Policy.

The simple reason it costs so much is because teens are lousy drivers (on average). I remember being a teen, and yes, I was a lousy driver too. I blame it on the fact that I probably watched too many episodes of Starsky and Hutch and Smokey and the Bandit.

Unfortunately, being an insurance agent doesn’t get me any special rates for my own insurance and I have an 11 and 13 year old at home that will be driving before I know it.

The big question is “how much will it cost to add a young driver?” The easy answer is, it depends. It depends on what city you live in (bigger cities have bigger rates), depends on whether or not the youngster has their own car or if they’ll be sharing the parent’s car. Achieving a 3.0 GPA or better in the most recently completed quarter will save between 15 and 30 percent. Is the policy already surcharged for tickets and accidents? What type of cars are on the policy makes a big difference? If Junior is going to be driving Mommy’s new BMW, then the rate will be higher than if it’s a 10 year old Chevy. All these (and more) can have significant impact on the rates.

But with that being said, I hate to be like a politician and not answer the ultimate question, “how much will it cost?”  If, for example, adding a 16 year old son to a two car policy with two drivers already, so you have three drivers and two cars you should expect to pay about an extra $145/month. If it’s a 16 year old girl, expect about an extra $135/month. If your young driver isn’t a good student, expect to add an extra $40/month on top those rates. Adding an older sedan with Comprehensive and Collision (3 cars, 3 drivers) would bring the monthly additional for the 16 year old boy with a good student discount to about and extra $190/month. Adding the same car, but for a 16 year old girl, the additional amount is about $175/month.

Any way you slice it, it’s expensive.

What we offer here at First Rate Insurance is, if you do make a significant change like adding a young driver, we will offer to shop from our 20+ companies to verify you’re still with the best rate possible with the coverages you need.

Speaking of companies, we just picked up appointments within the past 6 months for Grange, Encompass and Oregon Mutual. We’ve added them to our already strong lineup of Safeco, Pemco, MetLife, Hartford – AARP, Progressive, Kemper, Travelers, Foremost, Hagerty, Dairyland, Nationwide and many more.
