Search for Digital Technologies Faculty Position
Position Summary: In search of an enthusiastic faculty member interested in teaching digital technologies focused on modeling/scripting, BIM, and visualization as related to architecture. Looking for an individual who is able to both contribute to the discussion and provide guidance in addressing the challenges that lie ahead in both education and practice. Our ideal candidate is a passionate educator able to work collaboratively to critically address the role of digital technologies within design education and design research. Based on expertise, the new faculty member may engage students in seminars, design studio, and/or lecture courses, participate in design critiques, and serve on thesis committees. While a promise of excellence in research and scholarship is expected, the position also carries responsibilities for service to students, the school, and the profession.

Search for History/Theory Faculty Position
Currently, the Architecture Program in the School of Architecture+Design is conducting a search for a faculty member to teach history and theory courses in the undergraduate curriculum, including the required two-semester history of architecture survey and the required one-semester theory course: Concepts, Ideas, and Representations. This faculty member's advanced seminars will contribute at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. An advanced degree in history and theory of architecture is required, with preference given to candidates holding a Ph.D. and/or a professional degree in architecture. As well, a record of excellence in research and scholarship is expected.
The history and theory faculty search committee includes Kathryn Albright, Jim Bassett, Hilary Bryon, Dave Dugas, Kay Edge, Hunter Pittman, Wendy Jacobson, and Heiner Schnoedt; we hope that you will attend the candidate lectures and convey your impressions and assessments to the committee by March 20, 5 pm.

JOSEPH BEDFORD received Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from Cambridge University, London. He earned his B.Arch. from the Cooper Union and following, was awarded a Rome Prize for the study of Landscape Architecture at the British School in Rome. At Princeton University, he received an M.A. in Architectural History and Theory and currently is a PhD candidate. Joseph will defend his dissertation, Re-enchanting Modernism: “The Cambridge school and the hermeneutic theory of architecture (1965-1995)”, in August 2016.

OLE FISCHER is a licensed architect who received his Bachelor of Architecture from the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. As well, Ole was awarded a Master of Architecture and Doctor of Science in the History and Theory of Architecture from the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. A forthcoming book chapter extends his doctorial scholarship, "The Veil of Truth?--Henry van de Velde, Hermann Muthesius and the Battle over Ornament in Modern Architecture." Currently, Dr. Fischer is an Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Utah.

LAURA MCGUIRE has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Brandeis University. She received a Master of Arts in architectural history and theory and a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. During her studies she was awarded a Fulbright Grant for study in Austria. Dr. McGuire's dissertation is entitled, "Space Within: Frederick Kiesler and the Architecture of an Idea." Since 2014, Laura has been a visiting assistant professor at Virginia Tech.

CARLA KEYVANIAN has a Bachelor of Architecture from the Università Iuav di Venezia
(IAUV). She earned a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in History, Theory, & Criticism from MIT's Architecture and Urbanism program. Currently, Dr. Keyvanian is an Associate Professor at Auburn University and has published widely on the discipline and teaching of architectural history. Her next book project is entitled, "An Architecture of Reason: Leon Battista Alberti and Fra' Giocondo."

The total award is $10,000, and we have a special award for students only.
Registrations and participation in this competition is totally free. The submissions will be evaluated by the global designer community through online digital media apps, and judged at an Awards Ceremony in Chicago by renowned architects on June 16, 2016.

Dear Prospective CASA Student,
Cathi and I are organizing the 2016 CASA Mexico Study Abroad Program for this summer and we hope you might join us. We know that it will give you a unique opportunity to immerse yourself into the architecture, culture, art and history of Mexico, and a focused attention on your personal goals and perspective on your life as a creative person.
Cathi and I would like to know if you are interested in participating in CASA and to see if you need any further information to help you decide. If you have time over the next few days for a phone conversation, I would be happy to speak with you about the program in more detail. If you would like to talk, please send me your phone number, let me know what day and time works best and I will call you.
We will be flying down to Mexico next week to finalize the plans for this summer's CASA program and we wanted to explain the application process. Since we only take a small, select group of students, we would like to give you the opportunity to sign up while there is still room. Cathi and I are excited about this summer's program and hope you will be able to participate.
For your reference here is the latest CASA application information:
CASA Commitment We will be making the Mexico City hotel reservations soon and need to know exactly how many students will be attending. Therefore, we would appreciate a final decision from you by the end of February.
Program Agreement As soon as you formally commit to the program, we will send you an agreement which will need to be signed by you and your parents.
Program Fee The program fee is $3,800, which includes lodging, two meals per day, entry fees and ground transportation. Air fare and travel insurance are not included. A $1,000 deposit will be due by February 28th to hold your place. Please make out your check to Steven House and mail it to 1499 Washington Street, San Francisco, California 94109. We would like to receive the balance of your payment along with the signed Program Agreement by March 31st.
Flight Schedule The schedule is for all participants to fly into Mexico City on Thursday, May the 26th. Cathi and I will meet you at the airport upon arrival and take you to the hotel in Mexico City. There will be a "Welcome to Mexico Dinner" that evening and then everyone will get settled in before beginning the Mexico City portion of the program on Friday morning. We can also assist you with your airline reservations if needed.
Travel Insurance We suggest that each student take out a travel insurance policy for the duration of the program. CISI offers a very reasonable policy for students studying abroad and here is a link to their plans: http://www.culturalinsurance.com/students/
Passports Students attending the CASA program must have a current passport for travel to Mexico. Foreign students may need to obtain a visa. If you don't have a current passport or visa we suggest you apply for one as soon as possible.

The Atlantic Coast Conference supports undergraduate research and creative scholarship using income generated by the ACC Football Championship Game. Supplemental allocations by individual universities and various grants expand program impact. The ACC Creativity and Innovation Fellowship Program supports undergraduates involved in student-driven projects at each of the ACC member campuses.
Virginia Tech is offering competitive financial awards of up to $2,000 to support undergraduate research projects or creative works within any of the academic disciplines. Application review begins on February 22, 2016. Decisions will be made and applicants notified no later than March 21, 2016. Awards are to fund projects in the summer of 2016. more

NEW - Seeking student artist interested in architecture, landscapes and sustainable design!
I'm a Blacksburg resident with a 4 acre property in the city limits of Asheville, NC. Recently I've been working with a local landscape architect and civil engineer to design a 14-16 home neighborhood and I'd like to commission a Virginia Tech student to produce a hand drawn artist rendering of the community to use as marketing materials and help bring this vision to life.
Some of the neighborhood features include: old growth trees, sloped hillsides, a community garden, mulch walking trails, a rain garden for the storm-water management, a pavilion, benches, fire pit and the homes will be approximately 1400 sq/ft, 2 level and NC green built certified.
Please email me if this is a project that interests you and you have the artistic skills and time this semester to work with me to bring this vision to life. I'm able to pay a small award of $200 for the drawing(s) and you would be free to use this project as part of your professional portfolio.

1st International Conference on Meaningful Technology and Design (MTD’2017), to be held in Guimarães, Portugal, July, 2017.
The aim of MTD2017 is to bring together international participants interested in the recent advances in the art and practice of product design and to promote the discussion around this topic. The conference is intended for a wide audience including designers, engineers, architects, academics, researchers, product manufacturers and material suppliers, among others.
All major aspects of design and technology will be addressed. They include the following topics: meaningful technologies; meaningful design experiences; the use of new materials; the meaning of materials in design; computer and experimental methods; sustainability contribution by technology; the borderline between design and technology; acceptability of technology by various target groups; teaching meaningful technology in design courses; the role of materials and materials processing in product design; the history of the relationship between designer and engineers.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS – Prospective authors are invited to submit one page abstract, of no more than 500 words, before June 15 2016, in electronic form via the conference website at www.mtd2017.com. Authors will be notified on the acceptance of their abstracts no later than September 15, 2016. Papers must be submitted due to December 15, 2016. Acceptance will be notified before February 15, 2017.
