Grand Pineapple Beach Resort sold to Elite Island Resorts
Sandals Resorts International (SRI), parent company of Sandals Resorts, Beaches Resorts and Grand Pineapple Beach Resorts, has announced the sale of Grand Pineapple Antigua to Elite Island Resorts effective May 30, 2016. The 180-room resort located at Long Bay, Antigua will continue accepting bookings and will remain open as it seamlessly transitions to a new name and brand, Pineapple Beach Club, on June 1 under Elite Island Resorts’ ownership. A busy weekend promoting Antigua & Barbuda in the US.
This weekend saw two major consumer travel shows on the east coast of the USA. The AHTA travelled to Washington DC to team up with Norrell Joseph of the the ABTA New York office for the Travel & Adventure Show. Also part of the team were Stanley Francis of National Tours and Stephanie Mack of Hermitage Bay.  This popular travel show saw thousands of visitors over the two days and the Antigua booth saw a continual flow of persons seeking information on the destination. A sweep-stake for a three night stay at St James's Club saw hundreds of hopefuls sign up for the prize.

At the same time Dean Fenton of the ABTA New York office was leading of team of Rod Hinds of Elite Island Resorts and Susan Coulton representing the Inn at English Harbour at the Boston Globe Travel Show. New England is an important market for Antigua and thousands of interested visitors were able to discover the attributes of the destination.
AHTA continues its campaign to improve road signage

The Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association (AHTA) Tourism Development Fund continues its campaign to improve the visitor experience by replacing more directional road signs around the island.

The AHTA in collaboration with the Antigua & Barbuda Road Safety Group and SignCom this week unveiled six new signs in Fort James, Fort Road area as a start to the second phase of the project to replace damaged and faded signs island wide. The first phase started in late 2014 saw the replacement over 50 signs across the island. Full story here

AHTA says management course pays dividends for the tourism industry

The Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association (AHTA) says management training leads to success for participants in its Supervisory Management Training course—industry insiders agree.
The 10-week certificate course, created in collaboration with The University of the West Indies Open Campus of Antigua & Barbuda (UWOC ANU), was designed to enhance leadership skills for hospitality sector management and supervisory personnel. And five years after its inception, industry insiders continue to laud its effectiveness.

Training Update
 
Our Italian classes will commence from March 3rd with only Beginners every Thursdays.  The classes will run for twelve weeks with a great curriculum that will introduce the students to grammar, phonetics, vocabulary and oral. Signora Cristina Ascarelli, a native of Italy, will return as the facilitator and promises that the class will be fun with sessions of role play and visuals.  The cost of the course is EC$ 400.00 per term.
We are bringing back our Wedding Coordinator Certification two day workshop from April 12th to 13th. This two day event will teach you how to be a successful wedding planner. We have partnered with a very credible, and reputable organization called the The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada Inc www.wpic.ca . This course will be facilitated by Ms Sue Morris, certified wedding specialist, and will start from 9 – 5pm (both days) at the Antigua Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute. This certification program has a cost, but we have received a discounted rate that can only be given through our Association.  Please see the attached registration form.  Our fees are EC$1500 members, and EC$1750.00 for non-members.

New $450 Million Resort Project for Barbuda

Another major new project, this one called Gravenor Bay — has been announced for the island of Barbuda.
The $450 million project on the southern tip of the island will be built in seven phases, providing a total of 1,100 jobs in the construction and permanent phases, according to Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Minister Asot Michael. Full story here
