INSIGHTS FROM THE MOUSE
I recently had the opportunity to sit in on a talk by John McColl and Matt Stewart of Yellow Shoes, Disney’s in-house creative group. It’s hard not to feel inspired listening to people who work for the Mouse himself. I often see work produced at places like Disney, Google and Twitter, and think, “Well of course they created something amazing—they’re Disney!” But as I listened, I found that I could relate to more of their industry experiences than I might have expected. Here are a few main ideas I gleaned from their presentation.
1. Make everything great, even if the brief is vague or seems ordinary.
One project McColl and Stewart discussed was a promotion for Disney Star Wars Weekends. The brief called for a commercial that promoted Disney Parks' exclusive Darth Vader cupcakes. That’s it. Despite the concise brief and short timeline for the project (and, I would assume, an equally scaled budget), the team came up with a clever, well-executed spot that stays true to Vader’s evil character despite from being made of chocolate.
