Last Month's Photo
402 Wilcox Street: It was built in 1922 and was the Castle Rock State Bank. In 1936 the Town purchased the building and it was used as the Town Hall and Library. Then in 1939 it was purchased by Philip S. Miller and became the Bank of Douglas County. After Mr. Miller's death in 1996 the bank and building were sold to FirstBank and then in 2008 it was sold again and is now home to Law Offices.

Volunteer Opportunities
Castle Rock Historical Society and Museum
Member Meeting Refreshments – Sign up to bring and/or coordinate members to bring refreshments to membership meetings. Cookies and drinks are all that is required, but your inspirations would be great too. The Society holds monthly program meetings for the benefit of its members.
Tour Planner and Organizer – The society and museum plan visits to local sites related to exhibits at the museum or tours to sites of interest to the historically minded. Past trips have included an historic tour of Denver, tours to local rhyolite quarry sites, tours to interesting sites around Douglas County, a tour of Glen Eyre (home of Gen William Palmer) and others. A Tour planner would arrange for several tours a year and serve as host for the tour.
Historic Marker Manager – The Historical Society has initiated the Historic Marker Program in Castle Rock. A local site with an interesting history has a metal plaque with a QR code (readable by a smart phone) with information and pictures about the history of the property. Twenty markers have been placed thus far. More locations certainly qualify. The manager would keep current markers up to date and work to add sites to the program.
Docent – The museum can use docents to cover for vacation time for museum staff. Docents conduct tours of the museum. A great way to increase your knowledge about Castle Rock and meet interesting people at the same time. Volunteer for as little as two hour commits.

Lionel Eugene Oberlin
Lionel Eugene Oberlin died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016 in Seattle Washington. Lionel moved to Seattle in 2013 to be near his daughter, Wendy Oberlin. Lionel was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mildred “Starr†Oberlin. He is survived by his sons, Dirk and Erik and daughter Wendy and grandchildren, Aaron, Jenifer and Aiden. Lionel and his wife Starr were well known to the community as strong supporters of Historic Preservation and the driving force behind the establishment of the Castle Rock Historical Society and the creation of the Castle Rock Museum. Lionel was born in Canton, Ohio, May 1, 1923. He graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1941. He and Starr became High School sweethearts and married after graduation. Lionel went to work for the Hoover Vacuum Company in a tool and die apprenticeship. He joined the Navy in 1943. He trained as an aviation mechanic in the Chicago area and was ultimately assigned to the Pacific theater. After the war he returned to the Hoover Company. He then decided to go to Grinnell College and later did graduate work at the University of Minnesota. After graduate school the Oberlins returned to Ohio and developed an interest in antiques. When they moved to the Pittsburg area for Lionel’s job with Westinghouse they eventually purchased and restored the Gaston House outside of Pittsburg PA. After a trip to visit relatives in Pocatello, Idaho they fell in love with the West and purchased and landmarked another historic house. In 1988 they moved to Castle Rock to be near their grandchildren. They purchased the Hammer House and put it on the National Register in 1993. Through Starr’s antique shop they met other local people interested in preserving the historic buildings and history of Castle Rock. They formed the Castle Rock Historical Society, pressed for an historic preservation ordinance and led the effort to establish the Castle Rock Museum. Lionel served on the Castle Rock Historic Preservation Board as well as the Douglas County Historic Preservation Board. Lionel served as the Director of the museum from its opening in 1997 until 2007. Over 25 properties have been landmarked since the passage of the ordinance including the “Rockâ€. Lionel and his wife were the first recipients of the Town Council award honoring those who have made significant contributions to the Town of Castle Rock. Their remains will be laid to rest in a ceremony at Cedar Hill Cemetery later this year.
