Intumescent is a substance that swells as a result of heat exposure, thus increasing in volume and decreasing in density.  So the path remains open for more conduit unless there is a fire.

Fire Rating:

• All sizes in the metallic version are rated for 3 hours. 
• The plastic version are rated for 3 hours for the 4” and under. 
• The 6” are rated for 2 hours.
