Welcome to the first issue of ELM NEWS for 2016

Welcome everyone to the beginning of another exciting ELM year. At the official welcome for our new Year Two ELM students the Dean of OMS and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Health Sciences, Professor Peter Crampton, noted the 2016 second year intake is the first to closely match the wider population demographically in terms of Mãori and Pacific numbers. This is a great achievement and bodes well for the future of New Zealand’s medical health workforce. For more see medinews

It is great to see OUMSA and ELM staff working hard to provide a wide range of activities and support networks for all students over the coming weeks and their time at medical school. 2016 also sees the NZMSA Annual Conference being hosted in Dunedin and this will be an opportunity for students to meet and share their experiences with their colleagues from Auckland Medical School. I wish all staff and students a successful and productive year ahead.

Grant Butt, Associate Dean and Director, ELM.

The annual tutor orientation was well received, as tutors began preparing for their small group sessions. The individual programme modules (EPE, Clinical Skills and Integrated Cases) each held their own tutor briefings and Tony Barrett, Education Advisor for ELM, organised a well attended session under the theme of reflection.

Thanks to Raewyn Lesa, Mary Furnari, Sue Walthert and John Egbuji for their excellent presentations.

MB ChB Assessment update
During 2014 OMS collaborated with MDANZ and eighteen other medical schools to create and review a set of 60 multiple choice benchmarking questions, selections of which were included in final or penultimate year examinations of a total of 3,994 students, including our fifth year medical students.  Responses from de-identified students were collated and analysed, and a final report released last year.

MASC are encouraged by the results of OMS students, and continue to collaborate in the MDANZ Assessment Benchmarking project.

Module name changes: EPE and Psychological Medicine
The Medical Curriculum Committee recently approved the changes to two important components of the ELM curriculum. Healthcare in the Community (HIC) is now Early Professional Practice (EPE) to better reflect the module's curriculum outcomes and the Behavioural Medicine block module is now called Psychological Medicine.

Med Moodle update
Users of the medical programme content management system Moodle will have noticed the new look to medmoodle following the upgrade over the summer break. The layout is designed to be more intuitive and provide a better platform for accessing lecture material and communicating with colleagues and staff.

MedMoodle provides medical students and staff of the University of Otago Medical School with access to communication tools, course materials, discussion forums, online assessment and many other features to help manage their study or teaching. If you need help with Med Moodle, please email med.moodle@otago.ac.nz.

Medical Library Changes

Staff and students using the medical library in the Sayers Building will have noticed some changes, following the decision to combine the Dental Library into a new health sciences facility. The OU Health Sciences Library is also currently undertaking modifications to space on the third floor to provide more study areas and desks.
