February 12, 2016: Getting Up
View this email in your browser

Dear <<First Name>>,

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. Psalm 20:7-8

We all fall. We all fall short. We all miss our goals. We all get discouraged. It is during these times that we have to make a choice. We will either perceive our failures as a part of us, or perceive them as a part of our history. When we see failures as "ourselves," we miss the wonder of life, which is the ability to go forward in grace from failure to failure.

In this scripture, David reminds us that there are two places we put our trust. The first is some outside security and the second is the Lord our God. Our lives were not designed for security and success, the two things that we think we long for. We were designed for trust. This is why Jesus remained an obscure, itinerant preacher. As the wisest and smartest person who ever walked the earth, He could have made worldly success and security His focus. Instead He chose trust.

Of course, I am not saying we shouldn't be wise and save and invest our money, or be excellent at our vocation. However, our focus even in these things is a determined trust in the Lord. We will never be fulfilled by outside security and achievements. Our fulfillment comes simply from being children who are cared for by Abba God.

If we are discouraged by our failures, it is a sure sign that our trust is in something other than Father God. It is time to get up. Reframe our past, yesterdays, and failures, and see them as catalysts for drawing us even closer to His heart.
