February 2016
Saturday, February 13:
All League members were invited to the Annual Program Planning meeting for 2016-2017 at the Wheaton Park District Community Center to discuss future unit events for the Wheaton League as well as the program for LWVUS.

First, was review of our local programs here: http://wheatonlwvil.org/files/local_programs.pdf for any positions to see changed or new positions to be added.

Second, was a focus on action for the 2016-2018 LWVUS Convention in June, including response to three questions put forward by the national league.  http://forum.lwv.org/member-resources/article/guide-program-planning-2016-2018

(Note: The third question on the LWVUS response form is "What LWVUS positions does your League use to take action at the state and local level?"  If you aren't familiar with LWVUS positions, the positions in brief can be found on pages 2-4 of Impact on Issues: http://lwv.org/content/impact-issues?_ga=1.142529714.1278308881.1450221883.)

Finally, the Tacoma-Pierce County, Washington League proposed two items:  For your consideration in National Program Planning: The League of Women Voters of Tacoma-Pierce County is not proposing any new studies this year. We ARE proposing TWO updates, however, which are primarily wording changes. The categories are Global Climate Change and Equality of Opportunity.

Thursday, February 18:
On February 18, Dr. Shannon Burns and Jane Hodgkinson will present the results of their position study on local park and recreation services. The Wheaton League determined two years ago that the former position of the league was no longer relevant. To this end, the study group of Burns, Hodgkinson, and Carrie Fullerton studied and surveyed all five of the park districts within the league’s service area (Carol Stream, Warrenville, West Chicago, Winfield, and Wheaton) plus the services of the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association.  The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Wheaton Park District Community Center.

Saturday, February 27:
The League of Women Voters of Wheaton, The League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn, the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, and the Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce invite you to participate in a Candidates Forum.  This Forum will provide an excellent opportunity for the public to meet all the candidates and become more informed prior to the March 15 Primary Election.  The Candidates Forum will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Jack T. Knuepfer Administration Building, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.  Go to http://wheatonlwvil.org/forum-2-27-2016.html for more information and a schedule of candidates.

News you need to know
WHAT COULD WE DO WITH A DUES INCREASE?  We have  been discussing this question at the board level and can see several possibilities that would only enhance our League and its services.  We could consider providing an honorarium or, at least, mileage to some guest speakers.  We could return to having a salad supper and paid speaker at our September  meeting and invite prospective  members.  We could pay room rental to take some meetings to communities where we have members other than Wheaton.  We could pay expenses to attend the LWVUS Convention in Washington.  We could purchase a projector to assist with our presentations (or at least have the funds available to rent one when necessary).  As we review the comments and input from out recent survey, we may find more areas that would have a cost, but could expand our outreach.
_____

Speaking of our SURVEY, here is some feedback:
  • The typical respondent to the survey has been a League  member for 6 to 12 years and has either served on a committee or been part of a study group.
  • Their initial reason for joining League was for political awareness, to learn more about local elected officials and community issues,  and to study issues in depth.  These are the same reasons they continue their membership.
  • They want the League to communicate with them through an email newsletter, special email blasts on topics of special interest, and email reminders of upcoming events.
  • For programs, they prefer short, structured presentations from experts with an opportunity for questions from the audience.  They like meet and greets with elected officials and community leaders.  They like candidates forums.

The League of Women Voters of Elmhurst invites you to hear from COLLEGE OF DUPAGE acting interim President, Joseph Collins on Wednesday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave., Elmhurst.

The College of DuPage has more than 29,000 students.  Two months ago, the school was placed on probation by the Higher Learning Commission, for concerns with the school’s integrity and governance.  With these considerations, we will be asking about the fate of the students, the use of the community’s tax dollars, the reputation of the school and how, we as citizens, can help move the politics out of the council and encourage all to look at District 502's future.

This program is open to the public and not an Elmhurst Public Library program.  Wheaton League members are encouraged to carpool.
