Active in the Workplace Video Series
Food and Families Health and Physical Activity Field Specialists, Tara Shafrath and Nikki Prosch, with South Dakota State University Extension, are excited to release the newly developed Active in the Workplace five-part video series. The videos are designed to help South Dakotans keep moving during the workday. The five videos focus on different target areas, including upper body, lower body, core, stretching and cardio exercises. All fitness levels and worksite settings are suitable for this video series.
These videos are designed for South Dakota workers to take quick 5-10 minute breaks to engage in physical activity. Instead of heading to the break room for coffee in the morning or afternoon, employees are encouraged to try completing one or two of these videos. Adult Americans spend a significant amount of the day in the worksite. Regular physical activity has inarguable benefits on health, the reduction of chronic disease and overall quality of life. Employers that encourage physical activity in the worksite have reported less absenteeism and higher productivity due to lack of illness, obesity, injury or chronic conditions.

Eat Smart in Parks
Eat Smart in Parks is a statewide effort aimed at promoting healthier eating options in Missouri’s state and local parks. This effort includes the development of a model
Eat Smart in Parks policy that guides parks in serving healthier options, training for state and local parks to assist them with using the guidelines and materials to promote healthier items. There is growing interest in ways parks and other places of recreation can offer fresh, flavorful foods to patrons that are good for them, too. The
Eat Smart in Parks project team is led by individuals from University of Missouri Extension, Missouri State Parks, Missouri Parks and Recreation Association (MPRA) and the Missouri Council for Activity and Nutrition (MOCAN).
