No. 29

From the Headmaster

We begin the second half of the Lent Term aware that it is a short burst of four and a half weeks until the Easter break. There is plenty to fit in to this time as Year Eleven and Sixth Form classes begin their revision and build up to their public examinations next term.

There are also lots of events to look forward to including the 1st XI Football match against The King’s School at Evesham United Football Club next Wednesday evening. Please do come along and support the team. We also have the DIY Theatre Company’s performances of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ on Thursday and Friday next week so please do join us in the GBT.

Included in The RGS Times this week are some significant Mathematics, Debating and Sporting achievements from the end of the first half of term and an impressive charity fundraiser by a group of Year Eight pupils. Well done to all of the pupils involved in these events.

The RGS Times also advertises the events of the term and it is well worth booking your tickets for the Choral Concert on Tuesday 15 March in Worcester Cathedral and the Cabaret Evening on Tuesday 22 March in Perrins Hall.  We also eagerly await the ‘Superball’ match on Saturday 19 March at The University of Worcester Arena, and again, booking your tickets is advised. It will be a fast-paced half term at RGS!

Oxford Finals, here we come!
Six pairs from the RGS Worcester Senior Debating Society, sponsored by Thursfields, travelled to the Oxford University Schools competition just before Half Term. Our Regional heat took place in Birmingham with around 40 teams from across the Region taking part. It was an incredibly competitive round with very few places available for the Final.  Read more here.
Under 13 Netballers take the City Title
The Under 13A Netball team took part in the City Championship Tournament, held at Nunnery Wood High School, shortly before Half Term, returned as victors.  The Chantry School was our first opponent in a game that was fast flowing with our shooters and defence on top form.  The game finished with a final score of 13-0 to RGS.  Read more here.
Footsore but Fulfilled for ‘Flourishing Fivers’
During Half Term, four boys from Year Eight set off to tackle the 31 miles of the Worcestershire Way to raise money for St Richard’s Hospice, as part of the School’s ‘Flourising Fivers’ campaign.  Tom and Phil Ehlers report on their sterling walking and fundraising effort.
“Early on Thursday morning in a frost coated car park, we began our walk along the Worcestershire Way.  Read more here.
Under 13 Hockey Girls - Double County Champions.
There was more success for the Under 13 Girls’ Hockey team this week, at the 11-a-side County Tournament.  They won the competition, drawing 0-0 with The King’s School and beating Bromsgrove School 2-0. This victory adds to the 7-a-side County Title and the Cheltenham Ladies’ College Tournament that they won back in November. The team now has the Regional 7-a-side competition to look forward to on the 17 March.  Read more here.
Multiplying Maths Medals
Following on from the team success of the Seniors who reached the National Finals in London last month, we returned to the individual competitions with the Intermediate Challenge for Years Nine, Ten and Eleven.  This involves using mathematics in problem solving contexts and, although past papers give an indication of what may appear, the theme is very much to prepare for the unexpected.  Read more here.
