Newsletter - February 2016

Thank you for the positive feedback!

I was heartened to receive positive feedback about my first newsletter which was published in January, thank you!

Here's a few comments I received from readers:

"This newsletter is great.  I found the info and links very useful."  "Thanks for taking the time to produce and share this."
"Your newsletter looks to be an excellent addition."
"Congratulations on this newsletter Shireen - it's very professional and impressive."

Speaking of words, one of my catch phrases this year is "words thoughtfully chosen". This is important to remind myself of this year in particular because I've found myself lecturing my teenagers too often! Therefore I'm being more mindful of choosing the right words to communicate - not the reactive ones.

Along those lines I enjoyed this article from Entrepreneur Magazine Online which is titled 9 Phrases Smart People Never Use in Conversation

Current Assignment

Please share the opening with relevant contacts and/or message me if there is anyone you can recommend I reach out to. Thanks!

The future of work - some interesting articles

Future trends fascinate me. Market dynamics, life expectancy, personal health and wellbeing, automation of jobs, the gap between income and expenditure, technology, lifestyle factors - these are all trends impacting on how people structure their work today and in the future.

Some recent articles and predictions about the future of work I found interesting are:

  • The working age may stretch to 100. Portfolio careers will be the norm. Reference: Rohit Talwar in The Wall Street Journal. Rohit Talwar quoted in the article is a futurist I follow, his business is called Fast Future.
  • Careers are expected to last 60 years not 40 years. Reference: AHRI - HRM Online.(Anecdote: I saw a resume the other day where the applicant said they had 50 years of work experience!)
  • Organisations will employ half the number of people they did previously, but pay them twice as much and expect them to produce three times the quantum (1/2 x 2 x 3). Reference: AHRI - HRM Online.
  • Today’s young people will hold as many as 17 different jobs, in five different careers, over the course of their working lives. Reference: Australian Government National Innovation and Science Agenda Report.
  • Its estimated that some 65% of children entering primary schools today will likely work in roles that don't currently exist. Reference: World Economic Forum.
  • People's biggest worry about their jobs is not about economic uncertainty or making progress in their pay - it's the fear of becoming obsolete Reference: Market Wired, research from SAP SuccessFactors.
  • Job groups likely to decline are office and administrative; manufacturing and production; construction and extraction; arts, design, entertainment, sports and media; legal; installation and maintenance. Job groups expected to grow are business and financial operations; management; computer and mathematical; architecture and engineering; sales; education and training. Reference: Mashable.

Do you have a favourite futurist you follow? Drop me a line and let me know!
