International Women's Day –
Women's Equity vs. Equality |
By Beth Ellen Holimon | Executive Director |
International Women's Day is March 8th and this year's theme – "Pledge for Parity" – brings up the issue of equality. According to the World Economic Forum, the gender gap won't close entirely until 2133. We know the benefits of closing the gender gap – Dining for Women Co-Founder Marsha Wallace addressed it in her blog and I addressed it in a blog as well. We know the importance of equality, but we also need to recognize the importance of equity.

2015: A Record Year for Donations |
By all accounts, 2015 was an amazing year for Dining for Women! With the grants we awarded in 2015, the total amount we have invested in women and girls since our inception has surpassed $5 million!
In 2015 alone, we received a record amount of program donations totaling more than $1,020,000. This was the first year that we have exceeded $1 million in donations!
Thanks to your generosity, we were able to fund three reserve grants (as announced in the February issue of The Dish) in addition to our monthly featured and sustained funding grants. We were also able to set aside $100,000 in program funds in anticipation of making additional investments as outlined in our 2020 Vision.
As we announced last year, our intent is to invest proactively in issues affecting women and girls in order to increase our impact. Our Board has since determined that DFW will intensify our focus on girls' education and, in an effort to do so, has been seeking potential partners. We will soon have news about an exciting partnership that will allow us to move boldly towards our 2020 Vision.
Once again this is all because of your continued generosity. Stay tuned for exciting news!!

New Committees Set Up to Advance Our 2020 Vision |
We are very excited to announce our latest steps toward achieving DFW's 2020 Vision. We are launching a new Operational Committee structure which will allow our members to engage more in the decision-making processes of DFW and influence the directions we will take in the future.
Our new committees will cover the key elements of our 2020 Vision: member engagement (Regional Leader and Summit Committees); grant selection (Grant Selection Committee, formerly known as the Program Selection Committee); diversity (Diversity Committee), and advocacy (Advocacy Committee).
These committees are still in the development stages, but we are thrilled to announce the appointment of the Committee Chairs. These individuals are all long-time DFW members who will lead committees in their areas of expertise. DFW is fortunate to have such talented and accomplished women to lead these important initiatives.
More information on these committees will be available in the coming months.
Advocacy Committee – Diane Smock and Betsy Dunklin
Diversity Committee – Denise Woods
Grant Selection Committee – Susan Garrity
Regional Leader Committee – Mary Liz Jones
Summit Committee – Lynn Broadbent

Connections and Transformation in Senegal |
By Marsha Wallace | Dining for Women Co-Founder |
When I received a call from Susan Anderson, a board member with The Grandmother Project (GMP), inviting me to travel with her to Senegal to see their work in action, I jumped at the chance. Patricia Andersson, inveterate traveler and trip leader, was up for the adventure too! CREATE!, another DFW grantee, was headquartered within several hours drive of the GMP office, so we were fortunate to be able to visit both organizations to see the projects we've supported with our DFW grants.

The Proven Platter – Nicaraguan Yuca and Cabbage Salad with Pork Cracklings |
By Linda McElroy, DFW Recipe Curator and Chapter Leader of WA, Seattle-1 |
Let's try something new this month! Yuca, (pronounced YOO-ka) is also known as manioc or cassava. Although you will often see this plant referred to in the US as "yucca", that is incorrect. Yucca is a totally unrelated desert plant in the agave family.
The tuberous roots of plants in the yuca family have long provided a carbohydrate-rich food source for indigenous peoples in arid areas of the Americas.

Our Featured Grantee for March:
Americas Association for the Care of Children (AACC) |
This month, our featured grantee focuses on reducing maternal and child mortality in isolated communities of Jalapa, Nicaragua. DFW's donation of $44,003 over two years will fund the implementation of the New Mothers Education Project through the certification of 10 women as ongoing trainers who provide education in prenatal care, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, the new mother's health, nutrition, and infant development in the first year of life.
By providing trained healthcare workers and education to under-resourced communities, AACC is furthering the reach of health services, supporting mothers and vulnerable newborns and allowing women and girls in these communities to have opportunities to improve the economic outlook for their families.

3 Things You Need to Know about our Featured Grantee |
|
Rural Nicaragua has a maternal mortality rate of 230 deaths per 100,000 live births, with 83 percent of these deaths due to limited prenatal education and access to medical care. Villages are typically located in inaccessible mountainous areas without public transportation or health clinics, requiring residents to walk 1.2 – 12.4 miles for healthcare. |
|
|
AACC is a grassroots, all-volunteer organization providing services in seven countries to reduce the impact of poverty. It uses the CEPET program model, created by Founder Deborah Young, which allows each international community to self-determine its greatest needs. |
|
|
An important part of AACC's project is training in kangaroo care, one of the most effective and proven therapies for helping low birthweight babies to thrive. By providing immediate and sustained skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby, kangaroo care mimics the closeness a baby kangaroo enjoys from within a mother's pouch. |

Sustained Funding Grantee: Nepal Youth Foundation |
In January 2012, DFW supported the Nepal Youth Foundation and its Indentured Daughters Program (IDP). This innovative program has succeeded in ending the practice of indentured servitude called Kamlari and has rescued thousands of girls. DFW is proud to have invested in the work of the Nepal Youth Foundation and is now providing a sustained funding grant of $20,000 per year for three years (2016-2018). These funds will be used to provide vocational skills to freed Kamlaris so they can support themselves and their families.
This sustained funding grant will increase the employability and help end the poverty of the girls freed from the Kamlari system. It will allow the girls to make their own choices and share their own destinies.

New, Updated Branding Guidelines |
Thanks to the generous help of Spicefire, a graphic design firm in Cincinnatti, OH, we have updated our branding guidelines. These rules are to ensure that Dining for Women's identity is properly represented in all media.
The updated branding guidelines include a new, stacked version of the DFW logo for use in vertical applications. Either the traditional horizontal version, or new vertical version may be used, depending on the format of the application. This provides us with an additional option for using our logo, while still maintaining the integrity of the DFW brand.
Any questions regarding these guidelines should be directed to Wendy Frattolin, Communications and Membership Director at media@diningforwomen.org.
