2014 NYC Health Department Hep B and C Annual Report


The NYC Health Department released a new report detailing Hep B and C surveillance, research, and programmatic activities in 2014. Data highlights include:
  • New acute Hep B cases decreased to 57 in 2014 from 69 in 2013.
  • New chronic Hep B infections remained stable at 7,459 cases.
  • Newly reported with chronic Hep C cases increased from 6,822 to 7,691 from 2013 to 2014.
  • Hep C-related deaths in NYC increased 46 percent from 1999 to 2013.

News

New cases of hepatitis C in NYC are on the rise. Politico New York. "The number of New York City residents newly diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C increased to 7,691 in 2014, a 13 percent jump from 2013 and the most new cases the city has seen since 2011."

Staten Island leads city in rate of new hepatitis C cases among young people. SILive.com. "New hepatitis C infections, commonly spread via needles shared by intravenous drug users, affected 63 Staten Islanders under 30 in 2014."

Veterans to be Treated for Hep C Regardless of Liver Disease Stage. "Effective immediately, for the rest of FY2016, all veterans with Hep C may receive treatment within VA facilities without regard to stage of liver disease."

NYC Health Commissioner Supports Hep B Screening Medicare Coverage. "Mary T. Bassett, MD, MPH, Commissioner of the NYC Health Department, wrote a letter to CMS  in support of a policy change to include Hep B screening of high risk individuals as a covered Medicare preventive service."

New York to Investigate Insurers Over Hep C Drug Coverage. "The New York state attorney general has asked 16 health insurance companies for information on their coverage of Hepatitis C treatments."

Daklinza/Sovaldi now treats Hep C genotype 1. "Approved to treat genotype 3 of the virus in July 2015, the regimen may now treat genotype 1, as well as individuals with advanced cirrhosis and people whose hep C has returned after a liver transplant."

Hepatitis C: Cost of Lost Opportunities. Lancet. "The Lancet identifies opportunities for national and collective action on HCV in the era of the Sustainable Development Goals."

Risk of Late Relapse or Reinfection With Hepatitis C Virus After Achieving a Sustained Virological Response: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Clinical Infectious Diseases. "SVR appears durable in the majority of patients at 5 years post-treatment. The large difference in 5 year event rate by risk group is driven mainly by an increased reinfection risk."
