Harlaxton Lions
Congratulations to the Harlaxton Lions for a wonderful season so far! The Lions have played very well this season and are currently 5-1. We are excited to see what the rest of the season will bring.

Congratulations to visiting faculty Dr. Omer Bayar, an Assistant Professor of Economics at University of Evansville, and Dr. Mari Plikuhn, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at University of Evansville, for their recent approval for tenure and promotion to Associate Professors!

Visiting Faculty News
Kristina Arnold, an Associate Professor and Gallery Director at Western Kentucky University, is teaching a variety of art courses this semester at Harlaxton College. Arnold received her undergraduate degree from Brown University in Community Health and her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from University of Tennessee. She has combined both of these passions by incorporating public health into her artwork.
Throughout Harlaxton Manor there is a variety of World War II era artifacts. This includes graffiti in the Pegasus Tower and over the Refectory. Kristina’s class, Gallery Studies, is researching and writing a Conservation Plan for these artifacts. Arnold is incorporating the manor into many of her courses this semester. One class is creating an exhibition on the History of Harlaxton for the Stone Corridor and assisting with cataloging the Harlaxton Archives.
House Competition: The Debate
The debate was a lively competition among the houses. The question of debate was “should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union.” Gregory and Mercia were debating to remain a part of the European Union, while Pegasus and Newton were for leaving. Each house demonstrated their knowledge and understanding of the topic in great detail. The houses debating to remain, Gregory and Mercia, took first place in the competition with Pegasus and Newton tying for second.
Travel
Long Weekend Trip: Scotland
Twenty students travelled to Scotland for the first long weekend trip organized by the college. The students explored Edinburgh, travelled to the Scottish Highlands, searched for the Loch Ness monster, and toured the city of St. Andrews. The tour guide that accompanied the group provided insightful facts that allowed the students to learn about the history and culture of Scotland in greater detail.
The other college-organized long weekend trip was to Ireland. The students had a free day to explore Dublin and two day-trips to discover other parts of Ireland. One day trip consisted of visiting the Cliffs of Moher and stopping in the Kinvara fishing village. The next day students visited Giant’s Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, which offers stunning views of Rathlin Island and Scotland.
North Wales
A group of students ventured to North Wales and stayed in Lllandudno, a beautiful sea-side resort town. They visited Caernarfon Castle, which is one of Wale’s most impressive castles with its size making it a commanding presence in the city. They also went to Padarn Country Park, which is an 800-acre park that offers views of spectacular scenery. On their way back to Harlaxton Manor they stopped at Swallow Falls and Betws-y-Coed.
Bath & Stonehenge
It was a tourist filled weekend for the students who went on the college-organized trip to Bath and Stonehenge. The first stop of the weekend was at the Roman Baths, where students were able to see the well preserved site that was once used for bathing. Throughout the weekend they visited many historical sites such as Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Abbey, Stonehenge, and Salisbury Cathedral.

Shakespeare's Death Day
Harlaxton College had a celebration marking the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. It was a busy day full of Shakespeare performances, viewings, and insults. The 1623 Theatre Company came to Harlaxton and had a workshop for students taking a Shakespeare course. Afterwards the company performed ‘The Course of True Love,’ which featured a selection of Shakespeare’s greatest love scenes. Following the performance there was a Shakespearean insult event in the bistro which consisted of students competing for the best William Shakespeare insult. There was also a viewing of the latest William Shakespeare movie, Bill, in the Refectory.
University of Evansville and Harlaxton College had a Valentine’s Day event where post cards were sent from around the world that showed current students and alumni’s love for Harlaxton College. The event at Harlaxton consisted of students decorating Valentines that shared what they loved about Harlaxton College. Many students showed their appreciation to the Harlaxton faculty and staff by sending Valentines that thanked them for their hard work.
The Community
Meet-a-Family: What have they been up to?
With the semester well on its way, students have been spending more time with their meet-a-families thus learning British Culture firsthand. Many students have experienced a traditional Sunday roast at their family’s home while some are planning excursions to visit local cities such as Nottingham and Spalding. Over the course of a semester many students spend their birthday at Harlaxton. This month, one student had the pleasure of spending her birthday dinner at her meet-a-family’s home. This is a great way for students to feel at home while they are so far away from their family back in the states.
