Voices From the Field: Georgia’s Student-Focused Reform Efforts

“One of the problems we face in education is that we work in silos. You’ve got P-12 school districts working in one silo. You have universities working in still another silo, and then there’s another silo where state agencies work. We’re often not on the same page. Because we’re not, we often don’t get done the things that we need to do that make a difference for meeting all of the needs for children in schools. The important thing is figuring out how to get out of the silos so that we can work together.”
-David Hill

New Paper: High Leverage Practices (HLPs)

HLP Report Authors Drs. McLeskey and Brownell

Teacher preparation at universities has been under scrutiny in recent years. One of the challenges for teacher education—and special education teacher preparation in particular—is providing a comprehensive program with limited time for course work and field experiences. Professional organizations, such as the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and accrediting bodies like the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), have emphasized the importance of practice-based opportunities for teacher candidates to learn to use important practices.

We recognize the importance of a coherent set of experiences and practices for a profession, but we are also aware of the complexity and wide range of roles taken on by special educators. Therefore, similar to the HLPs identified by Deborah Ball and her colleagues, in this paper, we make a case for identifying a set of HLPs for special education teachers that could serve as the core curriculum of a practice-based teacher preparation program.
