You're Invited! -  Ecosource's Spring Open House

Join us for our annual Spring Open House on Tuesday, April 26th at our Sustainability Education Centre in Meadowvale/Streetsville.

Come explore our sustainability demonstrations, including sub-irrigated container gardens, an off-grid solar photovoltaic system, an interactive urban water display (to be launched at the event). Get ready for spring with hands-on gardening activities for the whole family, and bring something to share in our first Upcycling Market - good condition clothes, baby gear, sports equipment or electronics are all welcome. The event will also feature the participants of our popular Cooking Up Tradition program and an exclusive screening of their short films about food, culture and connection.

Don't miss this exciting opportunity to connect, share and grow!

NEW for 2016! Waste Reduction Workshops

Region of Peel and Ecosource have been collaborating to update our Waste Reduction programs. In 2016, Ecosource has already engaged almost 4,000 elementary and secondary students in contemporary waste issues and fostered critical thinking through hands-on learning! Workshops are curriculum-linked and address topics such as the 3R's, composting, food waste, lunch-time packaging, electronic waste, closed-loop systems and sustainable communities. Our educators have heard so many incredible ideas for how to tackle global waste issues locally and we are excited to deliver even more workshops for the rest of the school year! For more information, see: http://ecosource.ca/waste-reduction-workshops/

Dig in to Play!

Ecosource is excited to be a part of the Lawson Foundation's national Active Outdoor Play Strategy! Our Dig in to Play program invites children 0-12 to participate in unstructured play in community gardens across Mississauga. Activities use natural materials from the outdoor environment to activate the body and the mind, such as digging and mixing soil and water, harvesting and cooking herbs, and building with tree branches and tree slabs. Dig in to Play encourages children and adults alike to re-discover the joys of playing in nature.

Visit our event calendar to find a drop-in session near you, or contact getgrowing@ecosource.ca to book a special session for your group.

Don't wait for the sun! Get active outdoors today with this fun tip from our play experts:
"Spring may be the season of rainy days and overcast skies, but this shouldn't stop you from getting outdoors in the garden to play! Springtime is actually the perfect time to engage children in construction activities with natural, found materials. Make a pile of sticks and branches that fell over winter and use your imagination to build a fort. Add a bit of rain, and this activity becomes even more exciting! The reward for all your hard work? A dry place to dream about your next nature adventure."

Ecosource's new Community Roots project offers opportunities for over 8,000 Peel residents to connect with nature, understand their impact on the local food system through hands-on learning and take action to improve the health of their communities through neighbourhood projects. The Community Roots project allows us to continue urban agriculture at the Iceland Teaching Garden while expanding our reach beyond Mississauga to support sustainability action in Brampton and Caledon. The program launched with our first in a series of sustainable food growing workshops to enthusiastic culinary students at Good Food Brampton. Students discussed food security issues, learned creative, easy and affordable ways to grow food at home and started their first seedlings of the season for their new planter boxes! We are looking forward to supporting more and more groups on their sustainability action journeys! Ecosource's Community Roots project is generously supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
