Welcome to the latest edition of MAC Inc. E-NEWS.
February has been an exciting start to the year for MAC Inc. we hope you were able to participate in some, or all of the events.
Included in this newsletter are reports on Essential Theatre's production of Romeo & Juliet on Thompson's Beach, Cobram, Co-Cheol were the first performers in our Cafe Culture Series at the Cobram Italian Social Club and Justine Clarke's performance at the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club..
Lord of the Strings was presented by Yarrawonga Mulwala Visitors Centre and proudly supported by Moira Arts and Culture Inc.
March is also a busy month with Moira Arts & Culture Inc. a sponsor of the Numurkah Rotary Arts & Craft Exhibition from 11th to 14th March, participation in Showcase Numurkah on 17th March and sponsoring Harmony Day on 20th March in Cobram.
Later in the year Mic Conway with Matthew Fagan perform for us on April 22nd.
The second performance in the Cafe Culture Series is on 29th April with the Melbourne Guitar Quarter.
The St Kilda Film festival returns in June, screening in both Yarroweyah and Yarrawonga, with the Cafe Culture Series continuing in August and November.

The Essential Theatre production of Romeo & Juliet was performed on Thompson's Beach, Cobram on Sunday February 7th to an appreciative audience. Played out before a backdrop of the Murray River Shakespeare's classic tale came to life captivating the audience..

Standing ovation for Co-Cheol
An enthusiastic audience gave Co-Cheol a standing ovation at their performance on Friday 19th February.
The first of four performances in the Cafe Culture Series was an outstanding success, and augurs well for the rest of the series.
Comments included: "Beautiful music","Talented girls". "Made my heart sing"."Absolutely amazing!" "sent goose bumps up my arms the moment they began to play the harp and then the voices!!" Thanks to all.
The evening commenced, for those fortunate to have purchased the dinner package, with a delicious dinner prepared by The Butlers Pantry from Numurkah of Irish Stew or Guinness Pie followed by Baileys Cream Cheesecake and cream.
The performance by Co-Cheol featured Claire Patti, Georgina Walton and twins Merrily and Ginger Hansen in a beautiful evening of four part harmony singing.
The second performance in the Cafe Culture Series will take place on Friday 29th April featuring the Melbourne Guitar Quartet.
Single tickets $30 full / $25 concession with pre-ordered dinner option for $30 per person.
Series tickets for the remaining three performances will be $75 with pre-ordered dinner option $90.

A sea of kids welcome Justine Clarke to Moira.
Justine Clarke delighted a crowd of children and adults at her performance at The Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Resort on Wednesday 24th February. Accompanied by her three piece band Justine sang and danced, leading the audience, up on their feet, in song and dance.
Comments received "What a fabulous performance! Justine was FABULOUS and the venue perfect". "Loved being on the floor together, very good venue". "Amazing show. So lucky to have shows like this coming to our rural areas". "Fantastic, congratulations on having Justine locally. We really appreciated it"."What a wonderful concert. Fantastic day for all the kids".

An appreciative crowd at the Yarrawonga Mulwala Visitors Information Centre on Thursday 4th February were captivated by the artistry and musicianship of Matthew Pagan "Lord of the Strings"
Commencing on a classic Spanish guitar, then a 10 string guitar Matthew finished the evening on an ukulele with music from classic Spanish pieces to Bach through to the Beatles.
Matthew commenced with a workshop for aspiring guitar player, then performed his concert.
Congratulations to the Yarrawonga Visitors Centre for bringing Matthew to Moira Shire, Moira Arts & Culture Inc. were pleased to support this event.
Matthew will be returning to the Shire on April 22nd with Mic Conway.

Harmony Festival celebrated the rich and diverse culture in Moira Shire on Sunday 20th March.
Funded by the Moira Shire Council Multicultural Advisory Committee and Moira Arts and Culture Inc. the day will be celebrated in St Joseph's Primary School grounds Cobram..

Sydney-based, ARIA award winning Mic Conway is a singer, musician, song writer, fire eater, magician, tap dancer, actor, multi-instrumentalist, juggler, latex mask maker, props builder and puppeteer.
"Street of Dreams" is the new collaboration between Mic Conway and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Fagan . Stripped back, irreverent and shameless, Mic and Matthew play unusual and idiosyncratic tunes that make jaws drop, toes tap and sides split.
Featuring some Captain Matchbox favourites like “My Canary Has Circles Under His Eyes” and a fiery version of "Masochism Tango" as well as a swag of Conway including "Jug Band Man" (which was featured on Spicks and Specks, September 2011).
This is Mic the crooner –inspired by Al Bowlly, The Ink Spots, Fats Waller and the Hoosier Hotshots. From the moody and dark "Street of Dreams" to the illusions of life and showbiz in "Paper Moon"; from the sculptural and pun-filled construction of a spare-parts lover in "The Dummy Song", to blaming a building for the loss of love in "Winchester Cathedral" – these are songs with strange, dreamlike images. Some classic tin pan melodies, some bizarre originals,
"Street of Dreams" is surreal vaudeville with a sense of humour. Croon to melt your ears.
Mic was born into a family of vaudeville theatre and opera. In the 1970s, together with his brother Jim Conway, Mic founded the Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band. To their surprise it became a cult phenomenon, recording seven records, two of which achieved gold status. Mic also joined the legendary Pram Factory Theatre in Melbourne, creating Soapbox Circus, where he was ringmaster, musician, juggler and acrobat. In 1978 Soapbox became the now world famous Circus Oz of which Mic was a founding member.
Mic has toured across Australia, Britain, USA, New Zealand and Asia delighting audiences of all ages. He has written and recorded many albums and worked across the board in theatre, music, cabaret, television and film. His current outfit, Mic Conway’s National Junk Band is successfully touring and recording the most unique music and entertainment that “defies categorisation” (Sydney Morning Herald).
Matthew Fagan who is opening the show has toured with international celebrities Natalie Cole, The original Buena Vista Social Club, Billy Connolly, Shirley Bassey and Michael Crawford . The 53 night tour with Billy Connolly was so successful that Billy presented Matthew with one of his prize banjos at the end of the tour and was quoted saying "Matthew is the best guest artist I have ever toured with."
Matthew takes you on a vibrant musical journey with a magical repertoire that crosses from Spanish Flamenco, Celtic, Bluegrass and Blues with highlights from CD “One Day in Nashville”, Virtuoso-A Homage to My Ancestors & Ukuleleland.
A particular highlight of Matthew's performance is his virtuosic hit rendition of J.S Bach's Toccata on Celtic Steel String Guitar which featured as the climax on the final episode of series 1, December 2012, on the Australian ABC TV1 Television Production "A Moody Christmas" The Melbourne show at the Spotted Mallard on Thursday the 14th of April features a re-ignition of Matthew Fagan’s group Gypsy Fire the original gypsy jazz, celtic world music group founded by Matthew Fagan in 1997. Gypsy fire pioneered the Australian manouche gypsy jazz stage with fiery performances at Port Fairy Folk Festival, Castlemaine State Festival, National Folk Festival, Wangaratta Jazz Festival and national tours .The original album " Indigo Moon" still receives regular airplay on ABC FM. Featuring Matthew Fagan 10 string spanish and gypsy guitar and Australia’s leading gypsy jazz performers Alex yarosh guitar, Joseph Talosi violin,Conrad Henderson upright bass and Marek Podstawek percussion from Django Reinhardt, Stephan Grapelli to celtic and world music, gypsy fire are a captivating live show.

THE WORLD THROUGH THEIR EYES: REFLECTIONS ON BEING YOUNG IN NATHALIA
The G.R.A.I.N. Store is up and running for 2016 with some very exciting happenings. Their first exhibition for the year: 'The World Through Their Eyes: Reflections on Being Young in Nathalia', opened on Thursday February 4th and sees the Nathalia Primary School 2015 year six cohort reflect on their experience of being young in the Nathalia community through photography. Inspired by images created by Nathalia primary age students in 2008 for the National Urban Design Forum, and being the culmination of a partnership between Nathalia Primary School students and staff and The G.R.A.I.N Store, this project seeks to highlight the importance of young perspectives in the thriving of communities.
The next exhibition will be a Superb Parrot exhibition in the front gallery entitled "Parrots on Parade”, to coincide with the Nathalia Easter Bardi Gras festival. The exhibition will run from 15th March to 30th April. Other local parrot pieces will be featured in the Community Gallery and in the Barmah Heritage Centre in the two weeks leading up to and during Easter. In April from 3rd to 17th the G.R.A.I.N. Store has visiting award winning Sculptor Peter Forward as an artist in residence. Peter will be conducting two adult workshops on 9th April and 16th April at the G.R.A.I.N. Store, teaching participants how to sculpt endangered species animals with recycled material. He won the Toyota Sculpture Prize in 2015 with his series of animals called "Departure Lounge". He will also be running workshops with Nathalia Pre-school children. Anyone can visit the G.R.A.I.N. Store during opening hours and see Peter at work during these two weeks. Thursday/Friday/Saturday 11am to 4pm and there will be an exhibition of his work and of local participant’s work coming up later in July. People who wish to take part in the workshops can contact Philippa Schapper on 0400037432.

Dreamcrossed: The Imagined Body

Dreamcrossed presents artists’ depictions of the body as a site of imagination, both as an excavation of identity and a surface embellished through ornamentation. Among the many artists represented, the exhibition includes the fanciful hybrid characters of Jacqui Stockdale, the tortured and tormented figures of Albert Tucker, the languid nudes of George Bell and Mike Parr’s discomforting scratched and smeared prints of the body. Drawn from Benalla Art Gallery’s collection, this exhibition includes photography, painting, drawings and prints.

Colour and Movement will present paintings from the CBUS Collection of Australian Art and the Benalla Art Gallery collection. The exhibition will navigate developments in Australian art in the twentieth century, exploring the journey through Australian impressionism, modernism, abstraction, postmodernism and contemporary painting. Colour and Movement will include many of Australia’s most significant artists and provide audiences with opportunities to gain a greater appreciation of their work.

Cornucopia
Cornucopia (meaning Horn of Plenty) profiles works by established and early career artists who utilise food and flora as an artistic medium or point of departure. A multidisciplinary and trans-historical show, the exhibition teases out strands of investigation around the production, consumption and distribution of food, as well as its metaphoric potential, socio-cultural uses and representation within art history.
