Welcome to our bumper March/April issue of Your Community, Your Planet! The longer, brighter evenings are perfect for fitting in a bike ride or a spot of gardening after work.

Our projects and services...

20160315_WAVE_Celebration_LINKESVolunteer Friendly Celebrations: Over 60 people, representing 16 different voluntary and community organisations, gathered to enjoy the Glasgow WAVE Project Volunteer Celebration event. After some delicious food and music, the three project partners – DRC Generations, LINKES and ourselves – were presented with their Volunteer Friendly Award in recognition of their good practice in involving volunteers in their work.

We Walk, We Cycle, We Vote campaign: In the run up to the Holyrood elections to be held in May, a new campaign has been launched called We Walk, We Cycle, We Vote and we are delighted to be supporting the campaign.

WH Malcolm planning application latest: following the recent decision not to approve the planning application for a gasification plant we are still waiting to hear if WH Malcolm will be appealing the decision. We will keep you updated when we hear more.

Garscadden & Scotstounhill decides: as part of a city wide initiative on community budgeting the Garscadden & Scotstounhill area partnership will be hosting a public event for local organisations to bid for funding. The event will take place at 6.30pm on Thu 21 Apr at Yoker Resource Centre.

We Go Pedal news: the next issues of the We Go Pedal newsletter will be back form the printers soon packed full of tips and info to help you cycle more. Check out the first issue here and keep up to date with We Go Pedal here.

Green Gym Springs into Action: the Green Gym meets at 11am every Wednesday! They will be at Riverside Museum on Wed 20 Apr and Jordanhill Nature trail on Wed 27 Apr.

De'ils On Wheels: and if you are looking for bike or need your bike serviced then the De'ils On Wheels bike workshop is open Wednesday 11am to 3pm and Thursday 1-5pm. And we also accept donations of unwanted bikes! And you may have seen our recent request for left-handed bikes!!!

20160223_YokerPS_CycleFriendly03Yoker Primary is a Cycle Friendly school!: Yoker Primary School is the first school in the area to become a Cycle Friendly School.  The award is one of a suite of Cycle Friendly Awards that has been developed by Cycling Scotland to help promote and support cycling locally and make our workplaces, schools, campuses and communities more cycle friendly.

Holyrood election hustings in Scotstoun: Scotstoun Community Council are hosting a local hustings for the Holyrood elections on Wednesday 27 April.

Cycle path diversion extended until end of May: the diversion that is in place on National Cycle Network 7 around the Dyke Road bridge in Yoker has been extended until 27 May.

Friends of Victoria Park AGM: The Friends of Victoria Park AGM will take place at 7pm on Thursday 12 May at St Thomas Aquinas Secondary, 112 Mitre Road, Jordanhill G14 9PP. Two major concerns are the future of the large north west area of the park – the former blaes pitches - also the state of the fossil grove. It’s very important that there is a good turnout for this meeting so please come along.

Victoria Park to get wheelchair round-a-bout: Friends of Victoria Park Glasgow have secured £10,000 to install a roundabout for wheelchair users from the Scottish Government’s Communities and Families Fund

Whiteinch Bike Club: The Whiteinch Bike Club are geared up for Spring. The club meets every second Thursday at 5pm in The Whiteinch Centre and this is followed on the Saturday by a cycle ride. The next get-togethers are on Thu 28 and Sat 30 Apr.

European Cycling Challenge 2016: The European Cycling Challenge – ECC2016 is a urban cyclists’ team competition. It takes place from 1 to 31 May 2016. It is a challenge among European cities: the City that “rides” the longest total distance wins!

Pedal on Parliament: Pedal On Parliament 2016 takes place at 12 noon on Saturday 23rd April. This will be the fifth mass bike rides on Holyrood and this year will be particularly important because it’s the Holyrood elections. Walkers are also welcome to participate in the event

Queen Street closures giving reduced local train service: Train services between Glasgow and Clydebank, Yoker, Garscadden, Scotstounhill and Jordanhill are currently halved due to Queen Street closures until Mon 8 August. It's also worth noting that Subway closures will be in effect for at least 4 weeks over the summer as part of their refurbishment.

WereWatchingYou_ImageTackling Dog Fouling: Keep Scotland Beautiful published a report entitled Tackling Dog Fouling in December, and have recently launched a new high profile ‘We’re Watching You’ campaign to address dog-fouling. Striking posters with hard-hitting messages remind dog owners that irresponsible behaviour is being watched.

subway_mapPetition to extend Glasgow Subway: A petition has been set up calling on Strathclyde Passenger Transport and Scottish Ministers to make good on a pledge to extend the Glasgow Subway. You can sign the petition here – it currently has over 3550 signatures!

Glasgow Cycling Strategy launched: Glasgow City Council recently launched it’s updated cycling strategy for 2016 to 2026Our vision for Glasgow is: To create a vibrant Cycling City where cycling is accessible, safe and attractive to all.

Local People Leading - a vision for a stronger community sector: Members of the Scottish Community Alliance have come together to produce a shared vision for the future of the Scottish community sector. Recently they launched Local People Leading – A Vision for a Stronger Community Sector.
