Demand that the government of Peru respect their rights and the environment!

Peru is in the midst of an environmental tragedy and action is needed today!

Three oil spills have been reported along the Northern Peruvian Pipeline since January 25th. The first incident, along the Chiriaco River, released an estimated 2000 barrels of oil, affecting eight Awajún indigenous communities and some 5000 people. On February 3rd, another thousand barrels contaminated the territories of Wampis communities, in the proximity of some 3500 people. And news reports are claiming a third spill near Pucará began just hours ago. Why is the government continuing oil operations while these spills continue to happen?

Support the affected communities today. Demand that the government of Peru respect their rights and the environment!

TAKE ACTION NOW

Amazon Watch is supporting the call of Peru’s largest indigenous federation, AIDESEP: Peru must respect human rights and the environment and stop all oil operations in the affected areas until the pipeline is replaced. Peru must completely clean up all affected areas and provide compensation for communities. To prevent further negligence, Peru must also hold accountable those responsible for these actions.

This tragedy further highlights the need for all governments to respect the calls of indigenous peoples across the Americas to keep fossil fuels in the ground. The destruction of the Amazon will have massive and catastrophic implications for our global climate.

For the Amazon and the people of Peru,
