Greetings Neighbors,

Here are some happenings in Newtonville and beyond:

Walnut/Washington Development—next meeting March 10
A community meeting was held February 11th about the proposed development at the corner of Walnut and Washington Streets. Here is a Newton Tab piece and here and here are some Globe articles about it. The presentation should be posted here but I don't see it - the City just moved to a new website and things are still being fixed; I have asked the Acting Planning Director to ensure it is posted promptly. The next community meeting is Thursday, March 10, 7PM at Newton North High School cafeteria. (I will not be in attendance due to a work commitment.)

Cabot School project meeting March 2
There will be a community meeting about the new Cabot School site design on Wed. March 2nd at Cabot School starting at 7PM. The meeting is being jointly hosted by the Cabot School Building Committee & the Design Review Committee. The intent of the meeting is “to obtain community input and feedback with regard to site planning and traffic circulation and discuss options and opportunities.”  A major update since the last community meeting is that the City is in the process of acquiring the property at 23 Parkview, directly abutting the school, and plans to use that property to expand the school site for parking or traffic circulation or both.  This is not an involuntary taking but rather a voluntary agreement with the homeowners. The City Council has taken the first of two necessary votes to approve the purchase.  Several residents have reached out to the Ward 2 Councilors recently, concerned about the current plan to close Parkview in front of Cabot School permanently. This will impact traffic circulation throughout the neighborhood. If you'd like to get more details, try to attend the meeting on March 2; if you cannot be there but would like the materials forwarded to you, let me know.

Tuesday is Election Day
Tuesday, March 1 is Presidential Primary Day in Massachusetts. Click here to see a sample ballot or find your polling place. And make sure to vote!

Newtonville Area Council Feb 25
The next meeting of the Newtonville Area Council is Thursday, Feb. 25, 7PM in the City Hall Cafeteria (basement level). They will be discussing the various developments going on in Newtonville currently. (Usually agendas are stored here but I don't see this one--as I said above the City has just moved to a new website and things are still being fixed)

Court Street Demo Underway
The demolition of two homes on Court Street is underway this week, to make way for a 36 unit 40B condo development.

Newton Food Pantry Needs Volunteers
The Newton Food Pantry is in great need of additional volunteers to unload and store food delivered from the Greater Boston Food Bank--specifically for ~1 hour on Mondays between 9--11:30am. The Newton Food Pantry is an all-volunteer non-profit that has been providing food for over 30 years to those in our community who experience food insecurity.  They presently provide a 5+ day supply of non-perishable and healthy fresh food to approximately 600 Newton residents each month. If interested please contact newtonfoodpantry@gmail.com

Newtonville Listserve
The Newtonville Listserve continues to grow! Email me if you’d like to be added. It’s a great way to keep up with Newtonville happenings, find a babysitter or snow shoveler, and more.

The next meeting of the Charter Commission is Wed. February 24 at 7pm in Newton City Hall, Room 211. The agenda is here.  The next meeting after that is Feb. 29, which will focus on the Executive Branch.
