Snow shoveling can be tiresome and a lot of strain on our bodies!

Free Report on Running Injuries

ARE YOU FRUSTRATED BY NAGGING INJURIES THAT GET IN THE WAY OF YOUR RUNNING?

ARE YOU SICK AND TIRED OF NOT KNOWING WHY YOU’RE IN PAIN?

DO YOU FIND YOURSELF WISHING THERE WERE A BETTER ANSWER THAN THE ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL SOLUTIONS ON THE INTERNET?

ARE YOU WORRIED THAT YOU MIGHT NEVER BE ABLE TO RUN PAINFREE AGAIN?

These are some of the common concerns that runners have shared over the years with us.  They are truly heartfelt and discouraging places to be.

BUT THERE IS HOPE!

INTRODUCTION
Runners are a dedicated bunch!  You’re part of a massive collection of health conscious, hard working, inspired, and literally enduring team.

Did you know there are an estimated 65 million runners in the U.S. alone!

From novices to professionals, recreational hobbyists and stress relievers to the health conscious working to lose weight or improve cardiovascular status, to dedicated fitness enthusiasts and competitors…running spans the ages.  There’s young children running a July 4th race with their parents to the 70 year old “keeping in shape” and enjoying the outdoors, male and female alike, from those who are already fit to those seeking better health – running encompasses all ages, sizes, body types, ethnicities, cultures, and any other “label” you can imagine.

For some this even lifelong endeavor of running can go unhindered by pain or injury from start to finish.  Unfortunately for so many others PAIN and INJURY become an all too often nemesis that applies the brakes to doing what they’ve come so much to love.

Check out these both humbling and compelling (not so “fun”) facts from a review study in the journal Sports Medicine:

37-56% of runners get injured every year (incidence) and that
20-90% of those injured runners have recurrences
Those injuries cause runners to stop training all together or at least reduce training in 30-90% of those cases.  Research also shows that
  • 20-70% of those running injuries lead to some type of medical consult and/or treatment

WOW!

If you’ve been running for very long you probably fall into one of two categories:

  • Right now you have or had an injury that hindered your running

  • You know another runner who has or had an injury that hindered their running.

But wait just a minute here….

YOU DON’T NEED TO PUT UP YOUR WHITE FLAG
AND JUST ACCEPT THE INEVITABLE FACT
OF BEING OR GETTING INJURED!

THE TOP FIVE RUNNING INJURIES…
The first step is figuring out what’s wrong!  In no particular order, here’s the Top Five Running Injuries you’re most likely to experience.  This should shed some light on what might be going on with your own injury or pain, or even that you can share with a loved one whose running is limited by pain.  Hopefully it’ll be a springboard to really compelling you to “Do The Right Thing.”   Handle it properly the first time.  If it’s not the first time – now!

PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN
This term really is just an anatomic description of where someone feels their pain.  So the terms ‘patella” (kneecap) and “femur” (thigh bone), mean it’s basically pain around and at your kneecap.  It’s what we call in medicine a “garbage can term” of sorts.  Not really a specific or easily testable diagnosis.

Oftentimes there’s pain with prolonged sitting… referred to as the “theater sign.”  But for runners they’re more likely to notice it happen upon landing or commonly also on stairs, maybe especially hours or the day after a run.

There may be tenderness along the border of the kneecap but sometimes there’s no external tenderness you can feel to the touch.  The pain may feel to you like it’s “inside” your knee or “behind” the kneecap.

Research has shown us that patellofemoral pain has a variety of possible contributing factors.  Searching out the underlying causative factors is the real key at the end of the day to treating this condition!  And so often it’s not your knee but a hip or foot or core/trunk related issue underlying your pain.

Good news:    PFPS is almost always a non-operative condition.  Usually once underlying problems are discovered recovery comes after proper stretching, dynamic balance, strengthening, power, deceleration training, or orthotics.

JANUARY PEAK PERFORMER OF THE MONTH:

Aryana Lougher-Harris
(Soccer Player)

Aryana injured her dominant right kicking hip in a soccer game in October 2015. She was diagnosed with an avulsion fracture (“ouch”) and put on crutches. She hobbled into Peak PT unable to put weight on her foot, looking nervous, unsure of what to expect, and a long ways from the normally happy and aggressive soccer player she was used to being.

Ary Says...”When I started I couldn't even walk!  Now I'm back to soccer four days a week and I can lift my leg, twist, and do all my normal activities!  Perseverance, being determined and good listening skills helped me through this. Peak Performance gave me confidence, a good understanding of how my body moves, and how I can keep my body strong.  Most importantly, Peak has given me a place to go where I feel comfortable recovering from and injury. ”

Mike Says..."Boy - what an awesome young lady Ary is!
As a 13 year old to be
literally unable to move your own leg or put weight on it had to be scary.  But she trusted  me, did her homework, was dedicated, and showed maturity beyond her years.  Ary's been so fun to work with- seeing her confidence grow and that infectious smile beaming with the news she'd gone back to soccer practices was priceless! Congrats Ary!
