From the Principal's Desk
As we inch closer to March Break, we start to wonder where the year has gone. It is more important than ever for students to be at school regularly and on time. Please encourage your child to seek assistance and clarity around expectations in and out of the classroom around things such as homework, rules and routines, taking part in sports and clubs, etc.
There are lots of exciting events happening at Wilkinson and as Spring approaches, there will be many opportunities to take part in experiential learning in the outdoors and in the community. Please make note of these important updates:
Wilkinson 100th Anniversary
We are putting a call out to all Wilkinson attendees past and present to contribute something to our 100th Anniversary celebration. This can be an artifact, photo, old yearbooks, memorabilia etc. Mr. Cross and his students in room 9 will be responsible for any items that are loaned to the school and they should be dropped off at the office or room 9. The date for the celebration is May 14, 2016, at 1:00 pm.
Check out the Facebook page for more information. We hope to have everyone there to celebrate the history of this building and the role it has played in shaping the lives of so many people and this community over the past 100 years.
Safety
Remember to go over road safety rules with your children as the weather warms up and children spend more time outside. We will be reinforcing street safety, particularly using cross-walks, in the classrooms in the coming weeks.
Roofing Project
The roofers have not been on-site for quite some time due to Weather and safety training. We hope to have a more favourable update soon as to when the project will be complete. The good news is that when the roofers have been on-site, the air quality inside the building has remained well above acceptable levels.
School Parking Lot
We have been reminding parents regularly that the under no circumstances are students to be dropped off in the Parking lot. This practice is very dangerous and students should not be in the parking lot at any time for any reason unless accompanied by a Wilkinson staff or Parent for a special event such as a concert or Parent-Teacher night.
Please drop your children off in the designated drop-off area on Donlands Avenue in front of the Building. There is an entrance on the North end of the building for students to enter the school yard. Students will no longer be able to enter the school yard through the parking lot.
Additional PA Day – Important Information for Parents
All TDSB schools will have a newly designated P.A. Day on Friday, April 15, 2016. This additional P.A. Day has been mandated by the Ministry of Education as a result of provincial labour negotiations.
All TDSB schools will be closed to students on Friday, April 15, 2016. On this day, teachers will be taking part in professional development on provincial education priorities identified by the Minister of Education.
Most Before-and-After School Programs will offer full-day care for children currently registered in their program on the P.A. Day. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to speak to their local child care provider for further details. The remainder of the 2015-2016 school year calendar remains unaffected. Details on the school year calendar can be found on the TDSB website.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of your Parent Council members, and especially members of the Communications Committee, who have taken on the important role of communication between home and school. You have probably noticed improvements in this area already and I know there is more to come. Your Parent Council representatives work very hard and are committed to making Wilkinson a wonderful place to call home.
