Welcome to the latest updates from the Oxford AHSN. There is mixed news this month. We were delighted that a blueprint to put health and wellbeing at the heart of new housing development in Bicester was one of ten projects across England included in the Healthy New Towns initiative unveiled by NHS England Chief Executive Simon Stevens. The Oxford AHSN has been - and will continue to be - a key partner in this exciting project.
Sadly, we also report the death of Mark Stone. Mark was an outstanding patient leader who brought an invaluable patient perspective to so many of our projects. We will greatly miss his perceptive observations and vital contributions but his legacy lives on in our networks and projects.

Roadshows programme takes shape
We’re holding a series of roadshows with our partners in May to showcase the work of all in the Oxford AHSN. Each event is from 4-6pm with input from the NHS, academia and industry with a tailored local focus. Dates confirmed so far include:
- 9 May – Oxford, John Radcliffe Hospital Academic Centre
- 12 May – Reading, Royal Berkshire Hospital, Technical Education Centre
- 17 May – Wokingham, Easthampstead Park Conference Centre
- 19 May – Didcot, Milton Park
- 25 May – Oxford, Warneford Hospital
- 26 May – Milton Keynes, University Hospital
- tbc – Buckinghamshire

Our latest progress report is on its way
We’re finalising our latest quarterly progress report. It will include case studies on improvements in memory clinics for dementia patients, training in new techniques to help patients get the most from their medicines and efforts to reduce failure to return rates on acute mental health wards. It’s due out in the next few weeks.

WEALTH CREATION
We’re part of successful Healthy New Towns project
NHS England Chief Executive Simon Stevens has announced plans to create ten NHS-supported ‘healthy new towns‘ across the country including two in Oxfordshire. The aim is for health and wellbeing to be designed into their construction. The successful bid for the NW Bicester development, pictured above, is a collaboration of over 20 organisations including the Oxford AHSN. Read more here.
Help us build a picture of digital health
Over the last few months the Oxford AHSN, in collaboration with the University of Oxford and Isis Innovation, has been undertaking a detailed digital health mapping exercise. As part of this project we would like all interested in digital health in Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire to complete a short survey. Read more here.
Biodesign fellowships for medtech solutions to unmet health needs
Are you interested in healthcare technology and innovation? Would you like support to develop a medtech solution to an unmet healthcare need? The University of Oxford is looking to recruit four Fellows for its new Biodesign Programme. Fellows will identify, invent and implement a novel healthcare digital technology product. The programme is linked to a biodesign programme at Stanford University which has produced over 30 flourishing medtech companies over the last 15 years. Fellowship applications close on 31 March. £10m available for new vaccine initiatives
A new SBRI competition aims to stimulate the development of vaccines for priority infectious diseases, vaccine platform technology, manufacturing technologies that allow the rapid manufacture of vaccines in low income settings. Deadline 27 April. Read more here.
Technology showcase will focus on big challenges in chronic disease
The Oxford AHSN is teaming up with Isis Innovation and the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre on an event highlighting healthcare innovations from academia, industry and the NHS. Read more here.
We’re working with Johnson & Johnson on joint priorities
The senior management teams from Janssen/Johnson & Johnson and the Oxford AHSN met in February to review ongoing progress within our joint strategic partnership. We are working together across a number of themes with both sides focusing on delivering tangible outcomes for patients. Joint projects include the uptake of medicines, innovation, digital health and opportunities around medical devices. This group meets twice a year. Read more here.
Precision Medicine Catapult Oxford base opens up opportunities
Oxford was designated as a Centre of Excellence under the Precision Medicine Catapult towards the end of 2015. Since then we have been working closely with the Catapult team and our partners to identify projects that could be supported through the Catapult. Some exciting opportunities have been proposed through our partners across the development, evaluation and adoption pathway. These span disease areas including asthma, cancer, dementia, diabetes, mental health and stroke. Translating research into business: an Oxford AHSN workshop
We’re hosting a workshop at the international BioTrinity conference next month. It will explore opportunities and challenges related to open innovation and the approaches to drug discovery most likely to attract investment. The workshop features expert input from the Structural Genomics Consortium. Details here.
We’re supporting NHS entrepreneurs
The latest Oxford AHSN Entrepreneur Programme – a key part of our commitment to foster a culture of innovation in the NHS – gets under way this month. The course at Henley Business School follows two successful similar ones last year. More details here or watch the video below.

PATIENT SAFETY
Conference puts spotlight on real world patient safety solutions
We’re putting the finishing touches to the agenda of the Oxford AHSN Patient Safety Collaborative annual conference on 21 April. It will highlight collaborative work and innovations under the heading: Patient safety – strategies for the real world. More details here.

Remembering Mark Stone
Mark Stone was an integral contributor to our Patient Involvement, Engagement and Experience work. His work was acknowledged when he was included in a top 50 list of national patient leaders last year. Mark was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2012 and died earlier this year.

Second Leading Together course starts this week
The second Leading Together cohort come together for the first time in Oxford this week. The unique training brings patients and clinicians together to plan future services. It will be run six times across southern England this year with 120 people taking part. More details here.
