No doubt many Clubs have their curiosities, and Hobart has one presently on the viewing platform behind the Dedans. Royal Table Tennis can now be played.
The photos don’t quite do justice to the quality of the design, its construction and the detail. It is truly unique and beautifully finished.

Maker and Club member John Herbert, had been having a hit of real tennis with his son Xavier, and afterwards Xavier suggested that they put some walls up on the dinner table while they were having a hit of table tennis. John found that it translated quite well so he thought about building a genuine royal table tennis court.
As a picture framer /cabinet maker he decided to have a crack at it while he was running an art gallery. One particular feature are cardboard surfaces to keep the bounce of the ball down. Presently he is working on a slightly moderated version that will have a bouncier surface i.e. a wooden surface, which is slightly bigger, to accommodate doubles play.

The Rules which are on the side of the ‘court’ are reproduced below.
Rules 01/06/15
  1. Serve only from the Crown end
  2. Serve must bounce once on Crown end court, then must bounce at least once on the receivers side penthouse before landing on court within white lined boundary on receivers side.
  3. Volleying of serve not allowed, otherwise volleying allowed. (Over aggressive volleying not encouraged).
  4. Accidental volleys count as a point against.
  5. If the ball goes above the level of either side (60cm)?? that ball must be returned via either side wall or penthouse. If ball hits court first on these occasions, the player hitting the ball that has leaped above the side wall concedes the point.
  6. Otherwise the rules of Royal Table Tennis correspond directly with those of Royal Tennis including the scoring regime and two serves allowing one fault.
  7. With one obvious exception, if the second bounce lands in the ‘Nick’ zone, demarcated by an “N” then the point is won or lost depending on your frame of reference.
  8. When returning serve, if the return fails to land twice on the servers end and the server does not make contact with the return, then it is an automatic Last Gallery chase. This protects the server from unchecked aggression….

More than 30 members gathered in the Butler Room on Friday 4th of March to farewell Brian and Maureen Maxwell. Brian has been a stalwart of the Club, on the Committee, as Treasurer, as coordinator of Club maintenance, as a committed player and with Maureen a regular attendee at Club social functions.
The President John Moores, thanked Brian for his great support of the Club and made a presentation to Brian of a new GPS so Brian could find his way to his new home in NSW!

The completed 2016 Tennis Calendar is published in this Newsletter. Thanks to Convenor of Tennis Al Ramsay and Head Pro Barry Toates for putting together a varied program.
The program contains the regular Hobart tournaments schedule, opportunities to travel interstate to play in Victoria, a chance to play against interstate clubs here in Hobart, plus a number of new tournaments.
