POSITION VACANT: Editor-in-Chief, Vine Leaves Literary Journal
Applications invited for the position of Editor-in-Chief of Vine Leaves Literary Journal, the world’s only publication to focus on the lost writing form of the vignette. Since its inception in 2011, the Journal has enjoyed a steady growth in readership and has worked with talented writers and dedicated staff from across the globe.
As Editor-in-Chief, you will manage the biannual publication—print and digital—as well as develop a clear vision for its literary and financial stability in the context of the opportunities and challenges facing the publishing industry.
We are looking for a creative self-starter, with a minimum of 2 years managerial and editorial experience. You’re a voracious—and diverse—reader with extensive literary and design networks, excellent communications skills, and most importantly, a relentless passion for supporting aspiring writers. You are, ideally, an author yourself.
The position will be offered as a part-time, renewable, three-year contract, beginning late June 2016. You will report to the Publisher, Jessica Bell.
Please note: This is a volunteer position until the Journal becomes profitable, at which time a reasonable salary will be negotiated.
The Editor-in-Chief will:
- Coordinate the existing editorial team, and recruit volunteer prose and poetry editors as required
- Assign submissions between prose and poetry editors throughout each submission period
- Evaluate art submissions and select those suitable for publication
- Read prose and poetry shortlists and select those suitable for publication
- Collate, proof, and finalize the manuscript for each issue
- Coordinate the design of each issue
- Write the Letter from the Editor for each issue
- Proof the designed issue before submitting it to the Publisher for output
- Maintain and update the vineleavesliteraryjournal.com website
- Maintain the online submissions manager
- Post Journal news to the News Blog and social media accounts, and share all Journal activity through personal social media accounts
- Vote on Pushcart Prize nominees annually
- Write and submit sponsorship and funding proposals
To apply, please email the following to jessbell.vineleaves@gmail.com and dawnius.vineleaves@gmail.com:
- Cover letter explaining why you wish to work for Vine Leaves and how you would be an asset to us
- Your CV
- A link to a published article you’ve written (from a website other than your own)
- A link to a published piece of fiction or poetry
- A vignette sample (poetry or prose) either published or unpublished
Applications close Friday, April 29, 2016. Skype interviews will be held in late May/early June.
