Quartetto Gelato

Saturday, March 19 • 7:30 p.m.

What a season so far! First we led off in October with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Ensemble. A month later we returned with the Accordion Virtuosi of Russia — some audience members may still be smiling and tapping their toes. Two different styles, but both audience pleasers.

Now in March we’ll feature a return visit from the highly popular Quartetto Gelato.

This Canadian new classical quartet, based in Toronto, Ontario, was formed in 1989 by Peter De Sotto (violin/tenor) and three other musicians. Quartetto Gelato rapidly established themselves on the emerging “new classical” scene, winning the Debut Artist of the Year title in 1996 from NPR Performance Today. They were named “Best Classical Group” in 2010 at the 10th annual Independent Music Awards during Canadian Music Week.

This highly versatile group has a reputation for instrumental expertise on many different instruments. Their repertoire includes a mix of classical masterworks, operatic arias, tangos, gypsy, and folk songs from around the world. Quartetto Gelato also is known for performing without musical scores — and for their sense of humor.

Canadian astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk even took their first two CDs into space with him on board NASA’s space shuttle Columbia.

In other words, we have an out-of-this-world concert awaiting us! For more information see the season listing, program, and player bios.
