Alliance News

Join us for our next meeting on Wednesday, March 2nd at Twin Cities LISC, 570 N. Asbury St, #207, St. Paul (near Hamline University)

This meeting will focus on building plans for our upcoming statewide conference on May 26, 2016 at the U of MN Continuing Education Center in St. Paul. This year we're partnering with the Minnesota Public Health Association for back-to-back statewide conferences with the theme "Advancing Health Equity: Many Voices, Shared Vision," including a half-day of joint programming on the morning of May 26. We are gathering ideas for keynote and breakout sessions, and welcome ideas and participation! The conference will bring together over 150 CHWs, supervisors, providers, community-based agencies, local public health agencies, health plans, post-secondary schools, voluntary health associations, and other organizations for shared learning, networking, and discussion of next-stage issues.

Thanks to Twin Cities LISC for providing meeting space! The CHW Circle will also meet from 2:15 - 3:00 p.m. facilitated by LaShawna McKinney, HCMC.

Similar But Different: Expanding Your Chronic Health Conditions Skillset to Impact Alcohol Use
A free webinar for Community Health Workers (CHWs) and their supervisors sponsored by the Minnesota Community Health Worker Alliance and the National Center for Behavioral Health

Tuesday, March 15th, 2016, 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. Central Time

To register click on the link: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/934193829978921473

In this 90 minute webinar designed for CHWs, Nick Szubiak from the National Council for Behavioral Health will discuss the links between alcohol use and chronic health conditions, how these two dynamics impact and exacerbate the other, and how they can be effectively addressed with similar tools. Nick has over 15 years of experience in various clinical settings and based on his national consulting practice for the National Council for Behavioral Health, he is excited to talk with you about CHW strategies. He will discuss how CHWs can effectively respond to the needs of patients and families with alcohol problems, providing several new tools as well as identifying applicable skills that CHWs already have in their tool box for addressing chronic health conditions. Nick will also discuss a few ways to integrate mind-body modalities. There will be plenty of time for Q&A.

CHW Core Competencies ("C3") Project Update

At the invitation of national project organizers, the Alliance formed a work group last year to review a set of CHW competencies developed through a thorough and comprehensive national development and consensus process that has unfolded over the last 18 months, building on and updating CHW roles outlined in the seminal 1998 National Community Health Advisor Study. A report on C3 was presented at the 2015 APHA Annual Conference. Thanks to Chair Julie Mumm and CHWs Emma Geli, Deb Hernandez, Joy Rivera, and Kathy Skaj for representing our state. This topic will be featured at our statewide conference in May.
