LET'S TALK IMPACT!
We are excited to announce that Maria, Elizabeth and Alicia are back in college in January 2016!

Thank you to the Logan Foundation and the PepsiCo Showdown for helping to make this possible!

After seeing the premiere of IN THE GAME at the Gene Siskel Film Center last August, Richard Logan from the Reva & David Logan Foundation reached out to Kelly High School and said he wanted to help the girls from Kelly go to college by setting up a scholarship fund. In December, the Logan Foundation awarded Alicia, Maria and Elizabeth as their first scholarship recipients and we are thrilled to announce that all three young women are back in college!

Although attending college and staying in college, has been extremely difficult for Alicia, Maria and Elizabeth, these three young women never gave up on their dream to return to college. Many thanks to the generous scholarships from the Logan Foundation and Joe Trost (PepsiCo Showdown), as well as to the many donors to the GoFundMe campaign for helping these amazing, determined women resume their college education!

It's not too late to donate to Alicia, Maria and Elizabeth's GoFundMe campaign as they strive to meet their goal of successful graduation.  If you would like to help, please go here.

Please feel free to share this link. THANK YOU!

IN THE GAME to screen at SXSWedu and featured at Tucker Center Film Festival in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day!
Since its Chicago premiere at the Gene Siskel Film Center in August 2015, IN THE GAME has been seen by thousands of students at elementary schools,  high schools and colleges and by audiences covering multi-generations and cultures.

From Chicago Public School students at the DuSable Museum of African American History to Women in Leadership
(GapWIL) at Gap Inc. in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and at festivals around the country, the film has touched audiences and catalyzed conversations about race, gender, and educational inequality. We look forward to more exciting screenings throughout 2016!

IN THE GAME MAKES AN IMPACT!
Quotes from teachers, administrators and students:

"In the Game reveals the struggles and obstacles that many Latino/a students face in their educational journeys. As DePaul's student body contains increasing numbers of Latino/a students from the Chicago area (demographics are expected to increase up to 87% in the next decade), telling these stories has become even more critical, impacting the lives of our own students and explaing to them that their experiences are valid and influential. The girls from the film show perseverance during difficult times, making their narratives that much more significant and worth telling."            - Administrator, DePaul University, Latin American and Latino Studies

“The educational value over-exceeded our expectations. Students were engaged throughout the documentary and felt a personal connection to the students in the film. Many times they get so engulfed in their own personal neighborhoods that they don’t understand life outside their own fences. This film allowed them to see that many of us have a slew of obstacles we face on a daily basis and it's ultimately up to us to make a change.”                                                 – Fine Arts Teacher, Medgar Evers Elementary (8th grade)

“The message of the film is to never give up even after failure and to gain knowledge from your failure, to use that as fuel to keep going. The movie shows that you have to immerse yourself around friends who will support you no matter what. Those are true friends.”   – Student, Medgar Evers Elementary (8th grade)

“The film focuses on perseverance, teamwork, resiliency and those make great topics of study.” – Language Arts & Social Science Teacher, Columbus Elementary (8th grade)

“I cried. I cried a lot. I cried initially because the story seemed so familiar. I teach at a school located in a neighborhood very similar to Brighton Park. Our students face many of the same challenges…I also cried with joy at the beauty of the familial relationships that develop between the young women who participated on the team. The love between all of the players and the coach seemed truly genuine. I hope my students can remember this film as they begin their new futures and that the emotional impact inspires them to join a family in high school, whether it is sports or any of the dozens of other possible groups that exist.” – Teacher, Orozco Academy

"I couldn't be happier to be working again with Maria and the amazing, dedicated people at Kartemquin, truly a national treasure."

"Film stirs students to share more than a passion for soccer" - Naperville Sun

IN THE GAME screens at Waubonsie Valley High School

Last November, Waubonsie Valley High School presented IN THE GAME to over 400 people, including players on the Waubonsie boys and girls soccer team and members of the organization of Latino American Students at the Aurora school.   After the showing, Elizabeth, Maria and Alicia were featured in a panel discussion.

Waubonsie Valley varsity soccer player, Maggie Roe, said the film instilled a desire to not only help people in the community who don't have as much, but become more aware of the different lifestyles of other people. Varsity player Rachel White said that the documentary showed her,  "Soccer teaches you that through hard work and perseverance, anything is possible in soccer and in life."

Producer Mary Morrissette observed, "Alicia, Maria and Elizabeth had a terrific connection with Coach Julie and her team demonstrating how sports creates a strong bond of respect among students across all economic lines. It was important for these amazing young women to share their stories of overcoming obstacles largely not faced by the Waubonsie students."

Coach Julie Bergstrom who coordinated the event stated, "I feel the film showed how soccer brings people together to be a part of something bigger than oneself.  In life every group is different and yet the same. Soccer unites and is just a beautiful game for all."

Great reviews for IN THE GAME!

“Inspires warm admiration for the subjects while stirring up rousing anger at our city's social inequality—Kartemquin at its best." - Chicago Reader

“A deeply empowering work… an intimate labor of love and a poignant and often powerful study of hope and ambition in overcoming severe social  disadvantages.” - Chicagolandsoccer.org

In the Game doesn't position itself as a 'statement film.' There are no statistics emblazoned on the screen. It is a study of one school's athletic program and its players. And yet it feels more important than that. It feels empowering, even inspirational. You will lose some games. In life you will play some games that you never had a chance of winning. But the important thing is that you keep playing." - RogerEbert.com

“Powerful, humane and compelling." - Chicagoistheworld.org
