Concerned About Rising Rents?
Renters Rights Community Action invites you to a meeting on March 7 to talk with policymakers about rent control as a solution to the affordable housing crisis. Speakers include our friends and supporters, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and Councilman Raul Peralez.
Staff and consumers at Greater Opportunities face enormous challenges with affordable housing. The cost of housing makes it very difficult for people with disabilities to live independently in the community where they were born and raised. GO consumer annual income averages only $10,000 per year. Their SSI payments of $830 per month don’t stretch very far to cover housing costs in Silicon Valley, where $90,000 in household income is needed to afford a market rate 1-bedroom apartment. Disability service providers similarly face growing difficulty to recruit and retain qualified staff who can afford to work for poverty level wages, due to limited State funding that has not risen in keeping with the cost of living.
.
Your voices are needed to help policymakers formulate solutions that increase the supply of affordable housing for both consumers and staff, while also protecting current tenants who are being forced out of their homes and communities by rapidly escalating rents. We hope to see and hear you on March 7. See below for more information and to RSVP for the meeting.
