ISSUE 22 :: A Slow Season :: WHAT'S UP :: WORTH A READ :: ROUND-UP :: ON TREND

View this email in your browser

It's been a slow season for me. I think QuiltCon (even though I didn't attend!), a weekend class, and an out-of-state retreat have all combined to zap my focus. Lots is in the works though, so hopefully this spring will see more finishes.

WHAT'S UP

Meanwhile, the whole #keepinstagramchronological has been a distraction and concern for many (fingers crossed any change doesn't totally mess up the community we've built) and Amy Ellis/Amy's Creative Side of the popular Blogger's Quilt Festival has announced the new #IGquiltfest taking place on Instagram, and it start's today! Click here to see all the details. And a friendly reminder - if you're participating in the 2016 Finish-A-Long, just 10 short days until the month is over! Any chance for a last-minute finish?

WORTH A READ

:: Since I've recently had experience with a judged quilt show, I found Katy/The Littlest Thistle's Quilting and the World of Judged Shows mighty interesting.
:: Have you heard about the V & Co. Ombre Mini Quilt Swap hosted by Nydia/[nydiak], Nicole/[ModernHandcraft], and Chris/the_tattood_quilter? Besides being a great idea using a lovely fabric, it has a newfangled format that I think is genius.
:: Anne/play crafts created a video explaining her quilt design process using Illustrator. She's also offered a pdf copy of her QuiltCon lecture on design tools available for quilters. Nice.

:: Sew, Mama, Sew likes lists, plain and simple. Lately, it's been 12 Places to Donate Your Unwanted Fabric and  10 Minute Tips for Quilters shared by Diane/Butterfly Threads Quilting. I've even been know to provide a few - 17 Best Binding Tutorials22 Favorite Quilt Blocks, and my all-time favorite, 31 Inspiring Quilters.
:: Speaking of lists, Heidi/Fabric Mutt shared a really smart 9 Steps to a Happy Cutting Table
:: If you don't speak German, you'll need to translate (luckily, my browser does it for me), but Andrea/Quilt Manufaktur has a well-done series for beginning quilters, Patchwork, How Does It Work?

ROUND-UP

One of my favorite traditional blocks is the churn dash, and that's our focus this issue!

Laura Jane/Needles, Pins and Baking TinsChurn Dash quilt uses the basic block we are most familiar with but has her bee help her make small (6") blocks in a fun mix of rainbow, black and white. [laurajane7789]
Next it's little 4 1/2" churn dash blocks from Carla/Grace and Favour. Again, bee blocks, but don't you love how Carla mixed the solids in some of the blocks? [graceandfavour]
The Churn Dash Dash
by Anne/play crafts and the South Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild is stunning in a delightful mix of Heather Ross'
Briar Rose prints and a medley of Kona solids. [playcrafts]
One of my favorite churn dash variations is the Nested Churn Dash pattern by quilt jane. I made one block and turned it into a pillow cover, and really need to make another! [quiltjane]
The Liberated Church Dash Quilt by Sarah/sewjoycreations is such a fun and unique take on the traditional block. Here's a link to Sarah's block tutorial.
[sewjoycreations]
And then there's Jessica/Quilty Habit's new Deconstructed Churn Dash, expressed in a sparse but complete way. She says she's considering more deconstructed blocks and I can't wait to see! [quiltyhabit]
I've gathered several churn dash tutorials, in case you're ready to explore!

ON TREND

Kristin Shields provided one of the most comprehensive views of QuiltCon that I've seen. And in doing so, she introduced me to Molly Upton. I'm calling Molly Upton's work 'on trend' as there seems to be much chatter about her work of late, and it really is inspiring.

See the "Quilts of Molly Upton" video presented by TheQuiltShow.com, which highlights Molly's work and names her as a pioneer in the early stages of the art quilt movement. ArtsEditor has a nice article, A Warming Reminder: The Quilted Tapestries of Molly Upton. And then Quayquilter shares much from the More about Molly Upton lecture at QuiltCon. I'm glad to have been enlightened!

P.S. After encoutering vodka water as a pressing spray on a recent retreat, there was a bit of a discussion about sprays and starches on Instagram. Again, so many options and it seems everyone has their favorites! On said retreat, I was also gifted a spray mister and I'm finding I really like its prolonged mist.
