Gan Haverim Preschool News
by Rhoda Rohnstock, Director

Two new families and two new teachers were welcomed to the Gan Haverim community during the month of February.  It's amazing to watch the children greet these new friends and support them as they teach them about our school.  The students have exhibited a lot of compassion for others who are feeling sad in a new environment.

In March, we will celebrate Purim.  Discussion will center upon the ways in which we are brave, using Queen Esther as our model.  The children also will bake Hamantaschen, make crowns and noisemakers and fill Mishloach Manot baskets for their families.  The annual Gan Haverim Purim Parade will be held on Thursday, March 24, beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Wearing colorful costumes, the children will march through the CBH campus, and end with a celebration of song and treats.

Have you considered Gan Haverim Preschool for your child or grandchild, or perhaps recommending our preschool to friends or neighbors?  Please contact me
here, or at 530-758-0842, to discuss enrollment options.  Or, stop in and visit us anytime!
THIS SATURDAY, March 5

Lunch and Learn with Student Rabbi Stacy Petersohn
"Knowing the Difference Between Mordechai and Haman:
A Look at the Traditions of Purim"
12:30 - 2:00 p.m., CBH Social Hall

In the final moments of the book of Esther, the Jewish people created a new holiday for themselves to commemorate the triumph of Esther and Mordechai over Haman’s plan of destruction.  Every year since then, Purim is a time for Jews around the world to dress up, eat hamentaschen and hear the Megillah.

But, what is the secret behind these Purim traditions?  What is the connection between Purim and alcohol?  Were there other traditions that we don’t know about?  Join Student Rabbi Stacy for a feast from Chickpeas after services for the answers to these and other questions.  No RSVP required.  Please click
here to request more information.
THIS SATURDAY, March 5

"Vashti and Esther:  The Women
of Purim in Film" with Havdalah and Dessert Potluck
   7:30 p.m., CBH Social Hall

Two of the most dynamic characters of the Purim story are its queens, Vashti and Esther.  While their stories have been recorded in the biblical book of Esther, artists have continued to retell them through art, music, opera and, in modern times, film.  Over the last 55 years, Hollywood has taken the characters of the Bible and retold their their stories for modern audiences, Vashti and Esther included.

To learn more, bring a dessert to share, and meet for havdalah and discussion.  Questions?  Please contact Student Rabbi Stacy Petersohn at
slpetersohn@gmail.com

An Evening with Anat Hoffman, founding member of "Women of the Wall"
7:30 p.m., Congregation B'nai Israel, 3600 Riverside Boulevard, Sacramento

Israel's good health is threatened not only by the Israeli-Arab conflict, but also by struggles that rock Israeli society from within.  In a presentation titled, "When Chicken Soup Won't Do the Trick," Israeli justice advocate Hoffman will offer insights about issues such as women's rights, religious pluralism, racism and freedom of conscience, and what we can do to help meet these challenges.  To see the event flyer, please click here.

In addition to her work with Women of the Wall, Hoffman is the Executive Director of the Israel Religious Action Center and a former member of the Jerusalem City Council, who is a tireless advocate for issues of pluralism and equality.

Are You Ready For Passover?

Make Nugget Your Source for Pesach Provisions

As many CBH partners know, finding kosher for Passover foods, other than matzo, can be difficult in Yolo County.  However, with your CBH leadership on the case, solutions are on the horizon!

An ad hoc committee has formed to work with local grocery stores to improve the selection available to the Jews of our community.  In addition to receiving a nice list of items stocked by Whole Foods, a recent meeting with Nugget management resulted in an increased commitment to stocking a range of suitable goods, and more flexibility to make purchases of matzo, in particular, in smaller quantities.  Nugget staff intends to have their Passover items in stock by Wednesday, March 9.  Please prioritize shopping for pesach at Nugget, in order to ensure their continued interest in serving our community for years to come.

Questions?  Need more information?  Please contact
Ann Teal, Carole Plack, Janet Meizel, Pat Philipps or Nancy Loeb Williams by clicking their names.

Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento
"Reclaim the Records:  Using Freedom of Information Laws for Genealogy"

Sunday, March 20, 10:00 a.m.

Albert Einstein Residence Center, 1935 Wright Street, Sacramento

Brooke Schreier Ganz will talk about the organization she founded, "Reclaim the Records."  The organization uses state Freedom of Information laws to get "off-limits" genealogy records released back to the public and posted online for free.
The group successfully challenged the New York City Municipal Archives in court, and acquired the first-ever 20th Century genealogy indices from New Jersey.

In addition to founding Reclaim the Records (www.reclaimtherecords.org), Ganz is a computer programmer whose open-source genealogy software, LeafSeek, has enabled more than a million archival records to be available for free online. She is also a director of the nonprofit genealogy organization Gesher Galicia.
