Discover more at Southwell Racecourse
2015 was a really good year for all concerned at Southwell Racecourse, and hopefully 2016 can continue in the same vein. In 2015, average attendances at the course were up 15%, together with a big increase in covers in the Seasons Restaurant, which were up 67% on the previous twelve months. Ladies Day, which this year takes place on Sunday 14th August, is the highlight of not just the Southwell calendar, but also the local social scene with people coming from all over Nottinghamshire and beyond to enjoy the day featuring live music after racing and a fashion show before racing.
Other feature racedays include Family Fun Day in July, which will feature Paddington Bear for the kids, together with Countryside Evening in May and Free Residents Evening in April. The Free Residents Evening allows people to claim two free tickets and help support local charity Beaumond House Community Hospice.
Hall-Fast signed a deal in 2015 to sponsor the grandstand at the racecourse, which will of course continue into 2016 with one of the hospitality boxes at the course being named after Malcolm Hall’s very successful local firm.
The racecourse maintains its very strong links with local press, with monthly appearances in the Bramley Newspaper in Southwell and a heavy presence in the Newark Advertiser, who also support the racecourse on the Free Residents Evening and Ladies Day too.
Southwell also plays host to a range of non-racing events throughout the year too, including antiques fairs, pony club camps, caravan rallies and most of all, the “Gate To Southwell Folk Festival” in the summer will once again take place on the racecourse land.

Nottinghamshire a better place
Tim Gregory, Corporate Director, Place Department, Nottinghamshire County Council explained the diverse work of his department which is responsible for a broad mix of services including:
- Roads and transport
- Waste disposal and energy usage
- Planning including minerals and waste sites, heritage and conservation
- Economic development and job creation
- Working with the voluntary sector and grant aid provision.
Tim was very consious of the major traffic congestion isues in and around the town and touched on the recent Traffic Summit and the longer term plans for the dualling of the A46 which were he said 'one of the most complex engineering schemes currently being developed".
Devolution was also another key agenda issue for Nottinghamshire and neighbouring Derbyshire and members of the club expressed concern that Newark sat on the edge of what would be a very large combined authority. In particular that we might not get our share of investment in jobs, infrastructure and housing.
Tim noted the concerns and explained that the current proposals were complex and fluid and would need agreement from many parties if they were to progress.
The Serven Water upgrade to Newark, was also discussed as was the Southern Relief Road - two shemes that will have a impact on the town.
