RAND Corporation Studies Ethics in Translational Research

Does stakeholder engagement change the ethics of conducting translational research? Investigators from RAND Corporation, Rutgers University, University of California Los Angeles, and West Los Angeles VA Healthcare Center surveyed 63 expert translational researchers (including one at Tufts CTSI) on the feasibility of applying ethical principles commonly used in community-engaged research (CEnR) to translational research.

Survey participants agreed that ethical translational research should be grounded in trust. Further, the results of this exploratory study suggest the need for a new scientific model where, in addition to protecting the rights of human research participants, translational researchers consider the interests of their research team members and the community at-large. This approach could reduce community mistrust in science and scientists.
