Rod's "1916 Portrait Collection"

Rod Coyne has created an exclusive series of portraits remembering key faces of the
1916 Easter Rising.

“I remember learning this part of Irish history as a school boy, awe-struck and filled with pride.
In 2014 I started out with a need to update the 1916 images I had known since I was a kid. The faces I admired for so long had become jaded in my eyes; they had been re-hashed continually in books and posters. I decided not to trace from the photos but to process them through my own eyes, head and hand. I was trading “accuracy” for a chance to really commune with these faces until they started to become people again.”

Anchorman to launch “1916 Portrait Collection”

Rod Coyne's exhibition of sixteen exclusive portraits at The Courthouse Arts Centre, Tinahely, Co. Wicklow opens on the 13th of March at 4pm, we hope you can join us (show runs till April 9th). This Centenary event is the centre piece of Tinahely's 1916 programme including literary, cinema and stage shows and workshops.
We're so thrilled that Bryan Dobson, newscaster with RTÉ, has agreed to launch the show.

1916 Heroines

"Ireland was a very different place when I first studied the Easter Rising in the early nineteen eighties and there appeared have been so few women named in connection with 1916. Today, delving deeper I realize many names had been left out, and Elisabeth O’Farrell had been airbrushed out altogether. Attempting to right some wrongs I have included many 1916 heroines and consciously airbrushed O’Farrell back into the picture.” – Rod Coyne.

Worldwide Rebellion

After the whirlwind success of the 1916 Centenary Calendar (now on its third print-run) the artist has created a series of 1916 Canvas Prints. Both will be available in Tinahely next week and can also be ordered online from Avoca Gallery with free worldwide shipping.
