Cracking Fun at The Blaenavon World Heritage Centre this Easter
Throughout the Easter holidays there will be lots of things to do and make at the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre. Tuesday to Friday on both weeks you will be able to get creative making fun items with Artie Crafty and Julian from Paisley Bird. Blaenavon Heritage Railway
The Easter Bunny will be waiting to greet you as the railway starts its 2016 season. He will be around over all four days of the Easter weekend and there will be a chocolate treat for all children. 200 Year Anniversary of St Peter’s School
St Peter’s School built in 1816 was founded by Sarah Hopkins when she recognised a need to provide free education for the children of Blaenavon. 200 years on the school is now the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre and Library. This April there will be an exhibition and launch event to celebrate 200 years of this beautiful and important building. More information to follow soon!
Blaenavon joins in with Earth Hour – the global celebration of our brilliant planet
Local children and families have recently taken part in a project where they have worked with Head 4 Arts and local poet Patrick Jones to create poems about what they love about our planet. Individuals were then filmed reciting their poems as a part of a film celebrating everything that is brilliant about our planet. The final film will be shown at the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre on the evening of 19th March as part of the Earth Hour event. Congratulations to Hadrian’s Wall – winner of Countryfile’s Heritage Site of the Year 2015/16
The BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards have been announced and the historic marvel of Hadrian’s Wall has won Heritage Site of the Year. This historic marvel stretches 73 miles from the Solway Firth to Wallsend, and was built by the Romans at the behest of Emperor Hadrian, with construction commencing in 122AD. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, a significant portion of the stone wall still stands, offering a fascinating insight into the life of the legions and Roman military strategy. Blaenavon traders join campaign to tackle dog fouling
Traders in Blaenavon have joined a campaign initiative to tackle dog fouling in the town. Shops displaying a Green Dog Walker poster in the window will keep a stock of dog waste bags behind the counter so that any dog walkers who have forgotten their bags when out walking their dogs in the town can call in and pick up a spare bag. The sealed bags of dog waste can then be placed in any public bin thus giving dog owners a chance to help secure a clean and safe environment.
Torfaen’s Green Dog Walker scheme asks dog walkers to pledge to dispose of their pet’s waste responsibly, and leave ‘only foot prints’ when walking their pets. To find out more visit www.facebook.com/torfaengreendogwalkers
