Dear Global Philadelphian:
What wonderful news it has been to learn of Philadelphia being labelled by Lonely Planet as the #1 place to visit in the U.S, in 2016. We are excited that the nomination along with numerous other accolades will bring desired attention and visitation to the city and region.

In news about Philly, Mayor Kenney received delegations from the People's Republic of China in New York, Ambassador Qiyue Zhang who is much enthused by the possibilities offered in our World Heritage City. A new 6 day shipping line to Mexico operated by SeaLand Atlantico was feted by the Mexican Consul at a luncheon hosted by the Port of Philadelphia. On our Facebook Page we featured a "Crane Watch" article from the Business Journal featuring all the building sites and developments currently in process. Philadelphia certainly seems to be on a roll.

Check out our web site's events calendar to see the myriad global events hosted by our 200+ members. Chances are you are either very active or keeping to a limited set of events that you attend.  Emerging from winter and as the days get longer, be adventurous, step out of the box - see what new connections you might make by attending a new event. There is so much on offer and something for every one. In this February issue of The Insider we feature an event that will showcase Philadelphia in Austin, Texas. South by South West (SXSW) will hold a launch party on March 3rd here in Philly before taking the city's tech talents out of town. The IT Sector is in full evolution and an avenue to bringing much needed higher level jobs to the city as well as being a noted way to attract the "Creative Class".

At Global Philadelphia we are working with our partners and with city Civic Leaders to create World Heritage City messaging and goals that will be both meaningful and impactful to the city. To this end, we are pleased to introduce you to our new World Heritage City Coordinator, Nikia Brown.

Nikia who joins us most recently from the Please Touch Museum by way of the Ben Franklin Museum and five years spent teaching in  South Korea. She brings many talents including honed community outreach skills to the team. Be sure to meet her in the months ahead.

Our Board Chair, John F. Smith, III has been busy championing the Association's World Heritage City work, notably in a Think Tank conference at UPenn as well as working with the Consular Corps leadership. There is a possibility that the Consulate of Israel might leave the Philadelphia area, we hope this move will be reconsidered. Each Consular Corps representative is emblematic of a critical component to the business and government affairs of the city and the region. Indeed, as the city evolves, there is opportunity to grow the Consular Corps to encompass more nations thereby raising Philadelphia's visibility as a World Class City.

On a practical note, last month we shared with you the rationale behind the categories featured in The Insider Newsletter. This month we have added interactive icons germane to the categories.  Click the icon and you will see the list of organizations that are members of our association within each category. Take a look at the many entities represented! Each of these members benefits from our promotions, robust social media and connections in the region. Consider joining yourself.  The work of our members enables us to relay the positive stories in Philadelphia and form part of a collaborative movement sweeping through the city. Our offices are in Center City, come and talk to us!

Sincerely,
Zabeth Teelucksingh

Consular Corps of Philadelphia

GP + CCAP = Good Teamwork

During January 2016, Global Philadelphia (GP) and the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) teamed up to cooperatively address two very different situations – the first an uphill challenge and the latter a promising partnership.

On January 8, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced the possibility of closing its General Consulate in Philadelphia at the end of 2016. Given the importance of Philadelphia’s Jewish community, its loyal support of Israel’s global position and the General Consul’s diplomatic leadership in Philadelphia, this proposed action came as a shock to GP, CCAP and other international organizations in the region.

Response, however, was immediate and energetic, as John F. Smith, III, Board Chair of Global Philadelphia and Peter S. Longstreth, President of the Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia, joined a prominent group of civic and business representatives in a coordinated outreach to political leadership in both the United States and Israel. As a result, Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senators, Mayor Kenney and many others wrote letters of concern to Prime Minister Netanyahu and members of his cabinet.
We can only hope that this initiative while help to convince the State of Israel to maintain its consular presence in Philadelphia.

On January 28, John Smith and Peter Longstreth cooperated once again - but this time as panelists in a program hosted by the Lauder Institute of the University of Pennsylvania. The event was organized by Dr. James G. McGann, Director of Penn’s “Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program” and was one of similar “Think Tank index” launches in Washington, D.C. (World Bank, Wilson Center), in New York City (United Nations) and in 70 other “idea capitals” around the world.

Over twenty CCAP Members attended the presentation and participated actively in the panel discussion. Penn’s agenda included comments by Mauro Guillen, Director of the Lauder Institute, Amy Gadsden, Executive Director of Penn Global and William Burke-White, Director of the newly opened Perry World House. Penn’s importance as a global leader in “policy innovation” was a central theme throughout the discourse.
