From Pastor Tim

Dear Pine Valley United Methodist Church Family,

We have had a great start to this new year.  We are experiencing God’s presence in our Worship and in the ministries and missions taking place here at PVUMC.  For 2016, we have already received 26 new members as of the time this newsletter goes to print.  Our Worship attendance and Sunday School attendance are trending upward and we have about 340 or more people involved in our Small Group ministry for the Building Margin for a Balanced Life series.

In case you were not here on the Sunday that we gave the State of the Church Address, here is some of the information we shared for 2015’s year end:
In 2015 we brought in 81 new members, 29 by profession of faith.
Sunday Morning Average Worship Attendance
  2014 – 553         2015 - 607        a 9.7% increase
Celebrate Recovery
  2014 – 82           2015 – 95        a 16% increase
Sunday School
  2014 – 222         2015 – 225       a 1.3% increase
Regular Tithe and Offerings
  2014 – $1,099,255    2015 – $1,117,594         a 2% increase

Raise the Roof (to date) – $271,274 giving of total of $366,558 pledged.  (Reminder these pledges are to be fulfilled by March 31, 2016.)

New ministries were started and we have seen existing ministries revived.  Our Connection Café in the fellowship hall and our Bridge Café in the back of the gym have new volunteers assisting and serving in ways that are making it even more welcoming.  We are seeing new visitors in each of the worship services every Sunday and many people are finding great connections here.  All of this is to say: “keep up the good work.”  You are all doing a great job.  As we do this, I pray we keep our eyes on the vision of Connecting hearts to Christ and one another.  I pray we continue to live our values of Excellence in Worship, Engaging Spiritual Formation, Extra-mile Caring and Expressive Faith Sharing.

It is my great pleasure to serve you as lead pastor.  We have an incredible staff and a wonderful congregation.  I look forward to seeing how God will continue to grow and bless Pine Valley United Methodist Church as we pray and work together.

In Christ,

Pastor Tim Reaves, Lead Pastor

Children

Follow the path that Jesus took to the cross. Wednesday, March 16th @ 6:00
The children will be led through 6 stations where they will hear the Easter story. At each station they will receive a small gift to remember and retell the story. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children but it is not required.  Don’t miss out on this memorable experience!

Palm Sunday is March 20! The children will be participating in worship at all three services. They will be in a processional at the beginning of all three services waving palm branches. To participate they just need to be in the fellowship hall at 8:25, their Sunday School classrooms at 9:35, and/or the fellowship hall at 10:50. If your schedule permits our greatest need is at 8:30.

Easter Egg Hunt Sunday March 26th starting at 10 am in the Gym!  Join us for a great morning of family fun!  We will all meet in the gym to hear the Easter story. Then groups will be led to age level areas to hunt for Easter Eggs. Parents please plan on staying with your younger children. Everyone is invited to the playground after egg hunting for refreshments. There will also be real dyed eggs to eat and cheese doodles (thank Pastor Tim)!  We will be collecting peanut-free non-chocolate candy and stuffed plastic Easter eggs for the Egg Hunt beginning March 6.  Collection boxes will be in the Fellowship Hall lobby and outside the Children Ministry office. See Terri for more details.

United Methodist Women

This year’s presentation at the All Local Officers Training educated us about the MATCH (Mothers and their Children) program. This is a service that provides incarcerated mothers and their children with the support and resources necessary to maintain and strengthen their family relationships. MATCH intervenes to break the cycle of children following their mother’s path to prison as it is estimated that children with incarcerated mothers are 5-6 times more likely to end up in prison. Incarcerated mothers served by the MATCH program receive training that enables ongoing visits with their children. Incarcerated moms spend time learning new skills like parenting effectiveness, anger management and effective communication.
The MATCH program services four women’s prisons in the Raleigh area. In order to participate in this program women must not have any infractions in the prison. Parenting classes are developed especially for incarcerated mothers. Services offered by the MATCH program include supervised visits with their children in a home like setting within the prison system. Other services include summer camp for children ages 8 to 13, and backpacks for school-age children with donated items. Ongoing classes continue when mothers are discharged which include building healthy relationships, conflict resolution, budgeting, life skills, resume building and how to keep a job.
What can we do? BE a VOLUNTEER! Volunteers drive families to the family visits at the prison, monitor family visits. Other ways to volunteer is to donate child age gifts, birthday cards, gas cards, gift cards for instance VISA, Walmart, Target. For more information please go to http://mothersandtheirchildren.org/.

Another book review from UMW reading program:
Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond by Lilly Ledbetter is her fight for equal pay and fairness at Goodyear. Most of us have not experienced the life struggles that Lilly Ledbetter endured both in her personal life and her work life. This Leadership Development category book will uplift you and help you appreciate what one woman went through to ensure the equal pay rights that we have today. Lilly works hard for justice but also to have a balance in her life. “Remember, Ginger Rogers did everything (Fred Astaire) did…..backwards and in high heels.” - Bob Thaves. This insightful book is an enjoyable and educational read.

It will be an all day event, from 9 AM to 6 PM, including the 2016 Pinewood Derby, and culminating in the Cub Scout crossover extravaganza and a moving flag retirement ceremony by Boy Scouts, with Marines in attendance, retiring U.S. flags. Expect the show to be great fun and action packed and the ceremonies inspirational. Troops and packs can camp from Friday until Sunday.

Stephen Ministry

PVUMC is a Stephen Ministry Congregation. It is supported by our pastors, staff and you as members of our congregation. In Stephen Ministry congregations, lay caregivers (Stephen Ministers) provide one-to-one Christian care to those in need. Persons needing special help or those just needing someone to talk and pray with during a particularly difficult time can be encouraged and comforted by a Stephen Minister. Among the crisis situations a person may find himself in are: bereavement, long hospitalizations or long periods of being shut in, terminal illness, divorce, unemployment, relocation, loneliness and endless other situations that are difficult to bear alone. A Stephen Minister at PVUMC is trained to help you through these life challenges. Consider calling for a Stephen Minister at 791-0353 and ask to be contacted by one of our Stephen Leaders. All of your encounters will be strictly confidential and the Stephen Minister will remain with you through your crucial need. Our present class of seven trainees will complete training in February. They have learned to be open vessels to bring God’s love into the lives of hurting people. We are grateful for all who serve in this valuable ministry and we value the support of prayer from our congregation.

Yours in Christ,
Carl English, Pat Harriman, Barry Stallings
