Finding Cash in Dublin
Next Thursday is St. Patrick's Day, and that, of course, brings to mind Ireland…

…and Ireland makes me think of Dublin. If you haven't been to Dublin, you might just want to check it out because, well, it's sort of a magical, mystical place. Or at least that's how it felt to me when my daughter and I visited several years ago on our tour of Trinity College. (Talk about the luck of the Irish, I even stumbled onto a little cash while I was there. More about that in a moment.)
As universities go, Trinity is one of the best, or as our cabbie explained in his thick Irish brogue, "Oxford and Cambridge are good, but Trinity takes the biscuit!" (Watch this video for a quick tour.)

And inside the library, you'll find the Book of Kells, which I'm fairly certain I would have worked on by candlelight had I been born a Scottish or Irish monk a thousand years ago. Frankly, the work would have suited me (the artistic part, not being a monk ;-), because the Book of Kells is really cool, especially if you're into drawing and painting and hand-lettering, etc. (Here's a sample page and a link to a multi-part documentary about the illuminated manuscripts.)
After our campus tour, we met the daughter of an old friend for a hearty Irish dinner of pot roast at O'Neills (recommended) and strolled the Temple Bar area—memorable for me because it's where I first sampled black pudding (NOT recommended, though I have subsequently developed at least a limited appreciation of haggis, but that's a different story for another time).

Anyway, as we walked past the open door of an old pub, we heard a singer with a very thick Irish accent belting out Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." We all looked at each other and burst out laughing. And that… is how I found Cash in Dublin.

About Me
Hi. I’m D.E.Uhlig. I’m an artist, author, husband and father.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved to draw. Years ago I gave my wife a hand-drawn card for our anniversary, and she loved it so much she made me promise to ALWAYS hand-draw her cards. Then our three kids made me promise to do the same with their birthday cards. And when I posted some of my drawings online, people began asking how they could purchase my work—so I created this newsletter. I believe in something I like to call “The Happiness of Art” and I hope it makes you smile.
Official Bio
D.E.Uhlig is an award-winning illustrator whose work has appeared in numerous publications including the Kansas City Star, Christian Science Monitor, University Daily Kansan, Editorial Humor Magazine, and World Policy Journal. Commercial illustration and design clients over the years have included Samsung, Sprint, and the Los Angeles Times Syndicate, among others—and his Starbucks RedCup illustrations have been featured on the company's Pinterest and Facebook pages. In 1989, Mr. Uhlig co-founded Uhlig LLC, a leading provider of cross-media publishing and communication services in industries ranging from residential housing to book publishing to cancer care. Mr. Uhlig is married with three children and resides in Kansas City. He is currently working on children’s books, ebooks and apps.
