Big Idea Pitch Party:  The Winner Is…

The Surplus Project!  We are so happy they won–they will be diverting excess fresh and nutritious cafeteria food from landfills to people who are food insecure.  Food waste is a serious issue on many levels; it is an irrational misuse of resources (land use, water, pesticides, fossil fuels, electricity).  Further, food waste in landfills is a significant source of methane, one of the strongest greenhouse gases.

West Cook Wild Ones will continue to move forward with our Living Landscape Project partners; while we may have different missions, they all overlap and complement each other.  We appreciated getting the support and advice from the entrepreneurial leaders and from the Oak Park River Forest Community Foundation.  Our work is truly valued by so many in our community, and we are proud to continue to deliver programs and support native gardens because we truly believe (and know) that what we do is of vital importance to everyone.

The Big Pitch was a joyful, celebratory event, and we look forward to next year!  Thank you for support!  Let’s keep up our growing revolution.  You can read more about it here:  Chicago Tribune

Upcoming Events:

March 20, 10:30am-12:00pm Pam Todd (WCWO President) and Katarina Berin (Board Member) will present at Oak Park Temple's Speaking of Green Event.  They will share the beauty and benefits of native plants.  Last year, we donated some plants to help them start a native garden as part of their Green Chaverim Initiatives.

March 20, 2:30-4:3- PM: Our monthly program: Focus on Bats with Trailside Museum Naturalist Sara Rose. She will help us understand and appreciate these amazing and beneficial but often maligned flying mammals.  The discussion will center on local bat species, natural history, identification, and habitats.

April 3: We are sponsoring a showing of Symphony of the Soil at the North Riverside Library at 1:30.  Seating is limited: first come, first seated.
