A letter from the Head of School:
Dear Parents:
One of my very best experiences since coming to Peak was being in the audience Friday evening for the debut performance of the Peak Theater Club. “Alice in Wonderland” was not only entertaining and fun, it was an extraordinary example of what dedicated and talented young people can do when given the freedom and responsibility to create their own work. A huge shout-out to Selah Kreeger, the mastermind and driving force behind the magic of “Alice,” and my utmost admiration to all members of the cast and crew. I’m so pleased, too, that students from SMS and SHS were intimately involved – Selah has shown that The Peak School can play a key role in the arts in Summit County.
I’ll be at Eagle Rock School in Estes Park Monday and Tuesday this week, joining the team that is reviewing their re-accreditation. I’ve been curious about their program, so I look forward to this opportunity to learn about it in detail. I’m particularly interested in their interdisciplinary courses rooted in real-world application, and hope to bring some ideas back to Peak.
Lots going on at Peak this week!
First, a word about visits from college representatives: As you know, we’ll be graduating our first class next May. Not only is this very exciting for us, of course, but thanks to the outreach work by Nick Smith, the admission offices of colleges and universities are expressing interest in our students. Colleges want students who are self-motivated, take responsibility for their learning, have experience doing in-depth research, can self-advocate, and know what direction they are headed. Our graduates will be all this and more.
When they come to visit Peak, college reps will be meeting with our cohort of 11th graders and other Div III students who want to join the conversations. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about the various choices open to them, and to start building relationships with those institutions they want to apply to. Most college reps visit high school in the fall; some do in the spring as well. We’ll be posting visits from schools in the Peak Pioneer, and parents are welcome to sit in as well. A representative from Evergreen State College, a very interesting progressive institution in Washington, is coming on Wednesday at 11:00, and a representative from Fort Lewis College is coming on Friday at 11:00.
Wednesday evening at 6:00pm, Jessie is hosting an Open House for prospective and current parents about High School at Peak. I’m hosting a Casual Coffee conversation on Thursday morning at 8:15 with a focus on the Upper School experience, and particularly on Division IV – the culminating year at Peak. And on Friday morning at 8:00 is the next meeting of our Board of Trustees; all are invited!
I’d like to close by lending my support to the letter that you received on Friday from John Vincze, the Chair of the Board. If you haven’t yet made a contribution to the Peak Fund this year, please do so now. As I’ve said in the past, not only is the monetary donation important to balancing our budget, but we also need 100% of families to contribute so that we have optimal chance of grant awards from outside foundations that want to see the level of support within our own community.
A reminder about the March 20 deadline to re-enroll your students for next year!
All the best,
|
