The Ohio Turnpike - A Better Way To Travel®

5 simple steps to keep your E-ZPass account hassle-free

Keeping your Ohio Turnpike E-ZPass account up-to-date is the most important thing customers can do to avoid hassles at the toll gates while traveling. Here are five tips to help you avoid problems with your account:

  1. Mount your transponder in the proper place behind the rear view mirror on the windshield (but below any window tinting), which is essential for optimal reading as you approach the E-ZPass lanes. This is the best way to prevent any problems. Watch a VIDEO.
  2. Keep your mailing and e-mail addresses current.
  3. Make sure your vehicle information is up-to-date, which includes your license plate identification.
  4. Make sure your credit card information is current on your account, including new expiration dates.
  5. Make sure to list a contact person in the event you need someone to call us to update your account information.

Customers can monitor and maintain their E-ZPass accounts at www.ohioturnpike.org. Replacement mounting strips to attach your transponder to your windshield are available for $1.99 at Giant Eagle, GetGo, Barney's Convenience Marts; and Sunoco and Hardee's at Ohio Turnpike Service Plazas. Strips are also available by contacting Customer Service at 1-88-TURNPIKE.

Pavement replacement program resumes in 4 counties

As part of its largest capital improvement program in 15 years, the Ohio Turnpike is investing approximately $76 million in its pavement replacement program in 2016.

The Turnpike will replace pavement in five-mile long sections in the westbound lanes in Lorain County from Elyria Township to North Ridgeville (milepost 144.1 to 149.2) and the eastbound lanes in Trumbull County from Lordstown to Austin Township (milepost 216 to 221). The opposite lanes in these sections were completed in 2015.

Another five-mile long section also will be replaced in Erie County in the eastbound lanes from Groton Township to Oxford Township (milepost 107.3 to 112.45) and in Portage County from Streetsboro to Shalersville Township (milepost 186.35 to 191.4).

Information regarding these projects, construction zones and changes to traffic patterns is posted at the start of construction season in April.

VIDEO: Why it's important to Move Over or Slow Down

Ohio's "Move Over Law" requires motorists to slow down and, as conditions permit, shift to an adjacent lane when approaching work zones, maintenance and emergency vehicles on the roadside with flashing, oscillating or rotating lights. Become familiar with the law by watching the video below. It only takes less than a minute and you'll be glad you did.

Pledge to spend your time focused on driving and win $25

Driving while distracted is a deadly behavior. According to estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distraction contributed to 16 percent of all fatal crashes, leading to around 5,000 deaths per year.

Numbers like that are one reason why nearly 10,000 motorists have taken the Ohio Turnpike's Distracted Driving Pledge since it began last November. If you haven't yet taken the pledge, it's not too late to do so to earn a chance at winning a $25 Sunoco Gift Card. This month's winner is Vivek Sarasam of Peoria, Illinois.

Be a leader in your family and among your friends. Take the pledge to drive distraction-free. You'll get to your destination safely and you'll protect other drivers.

Ohio Turnpike tackles important customer question:
Do transponders have batteries?

The Ohio Turnpike is committed to excellence in Customer Service. In the spirit of that commitment, senior management from the Ohio Turnpike will answer E-ZPass® questions from readers and publish both the question and the answer. This another edition in an occasional series.

Question from Bernard P. Henri: We have been using the same two transponders in each of our vehicles since May 6, 2010. Do these units have batteries? If so, how are they replaced? Thank you for your attention.

Answer from Martin Seekely, Chief Financial Officer: Each transponder has a battery with a life of 8-10 years. If the battery stops working, the gate will not go up in Ohio and you will receive a red light out of state. If this does happen, the toll collector can still manually enter the serial number on the device to ensure that you receive the E-ZPass rate. If your transponder stops working, return it to our Customer Service Department for a free replacement.

Ohio Turnpike supports Girl Scouts of NE Ohio

The Girl Scouts Cookie Program is the largest girl-led financial literacy program in the world. It teaches girls business skills, money management and ethics.

That's why the Ohio Turnpike was proud to share equipment with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio by loaning 100 traffic cones to assist with traffic control during the annual "cookie drop" of more than 2 million cookies to Girl Scout Troops in 18 northeast Ohio counties.
