AVMBA

Over the foreseeable future the AVMBA will be posting monthly or semi-monthly articles in the BNS newsletter to report on what we have been up to over the applicable period. This first article will focus on what has been happening within the AVMBA over this past fall/winter.

The biggest thing we have been working on is membership in general. We have decided that a basic membership will be free and paid members will be given certain benefits. We have been coming up with some ideas as to what we can offer to our members (Monthly Epic Rides will likely be put into place). More will follow on this subject after our AGM. We have also been very busy with our routine weekly rides, and with the nice weather approaching they will start up again shortly. Everyone who attends has a great time, so come out if you’re in the area. To become a free member all you have to do is send an email to membership@avmba.com

The AVMBA was approached this past October by PinkBike about “The Gorge” being featured as the “Trailforks Trail of the Month”. AVMBA board members went out to inspect the trail system beforehand and were also interviewed. The article was excellent, and it also included some pretty awesome pictures and videos. Check it out at the following link: http:// www.pinkbike.com/news/trailforks-trail-of-the-month-the-gorge-2015.html

The AVMBA was involved in quite a few events over the past while. Events such as Pedal the Pumpkin, local parades, Corn Maze ride, and the Kentville BikeFest went very well thanks to our volunteers. We are anticipating the coming year of 2016 will be just as busy, if not more.

The AVMBA was involved in the most recent Provincial Trails Strategy meeting in Debert NS, as well at the NS Bike summit. At the summit, one of our members lead some group rides in support of the AVMBA, as well as Ryan leading an information session. Most recently we have been busy with bringing a 2017 Canada Cup race to the Annapolis Valley; proposals have been submitted so with any luck we’ll have some high level competition headed our way.

The AVMBA made some steps in becoming more visible in the community as of late. We attended the 14 Wing Welcome to introduce new people to our association. We also became a member of the “Valley Trails Coalition” and started introducing trail counters in the area and continue to be involved with the IMBA.

Trail maintenance is one of our primary focuses, and has been very productive as always over this period. The AVMBA built new bridges at The Links to make “Gravity” link more fun and safe, along with being instrumental on fall leaf clearing on all valley trail systems. Anima Mundi maintenance and cleanup has been going very well, and we’re also continuing to work closely with the “Noggins” land owners to develop a future trail system.

So as you can see, considering the size of the AVMBA we have accomplished a lot over the past Fall and Winter. It should be another very busy year ahead for all of our volunteers; we could certainly use extra help if you want to get involved. Our AGM will be occurring soon, where will have new by-laws and policies to approve. We will also see a transition on the board, which will mean lots of energy, new faces, and new ideas. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for a date, and remember to come on out and offer your input! http://www.facebook.com/AVMBA/

What's Happening around NS

Randonneurs Nova Scotia

Do you like long rides?  Do you like really long rides? Do you like nothing better than to ride through the Nova Scotia countryside, taking in all the scents and scenes along the way, in the company of like-minded riders? If you do, then the Nova Scotia Randonneurs may be the club for you.

Randonneurs Nova Scotia has been riding the roads of Nova Scotia (and beyond) since 2003. Randonneuring is non-competitive long distance cycling. Sharing the wind and riding briskly and steadily, long distances are readily covered.

You will find our 2016 ride schedule at http://randonneurs.ns.ca/Resources. Members will have the details of each week’s ride emailed to them a couple of days in advance of the ride.  You can also find us on Facebook under Randonneurs Nova Scotia

See you in the spring!

Lobster Roll ride 2016

Have you always wanted to experience a bike ride where everything is taken care of and all you have to do is ride? Where a sag wagon follows ready to pick you up if you need help or to fix your tire?  Where pit stops appear loaded with snacks and there are drinks for the taking?  Where you can stop and have a ready-made lunch that includes lobster and chocolate brownies?  Where police escort the ride through the tricky bits of heavy traffic?

Well, you can have all of that plus a ride through some spectacular scenery along the ocean and the Bras d’Or Lakes. All you have to do is sign up for the Lobster Roll Ride held on Sunday June 19th, 2016 at the North Sydney Firefighter’s Club. And the price is the princely sum of  $25.00 before June 19th and $35.00 the day of the event.

And it gets better! We’ve designed a ride that is made up of four routes. You can tailor your ride to suit your riding style. You can ride from as much as 100km to as little as 20 kilometers and everything in between. By mixing and matching the routes, 40, 60, 80, and 100 kilometer rides are available.

We’re also offering special cycling events for kids and a kids and family ride of 3 kilometers. The cost for kids 12 and under is $5.00 and includes a lunch. Riders under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
