1. Cruising into 2016 with Alaska tourism on the rise

The Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development’s Visitor Statistics Program released its Interim Visitor Volume Report (http://1.usa.gov/1T4FUSP) revealing that summer 2015 saw 1.78 million out-of-state visitors between May and September 2015, a volume increase of 7 percent from 2014. The majority of visitors were cruise ship passengers and account for 3 percent of the volume increase. The 2016 travel and cruise forecast is also expected to make a strong return with 30 large cruise ships scheduled to call in Alaska carrying a projected one million visitors. Cruise operators are gearing up for the summer with new ships, docks, excursions and much more.

New ships scheduled for the 2016 season include: Crystal Serenity, Explorer of the Seas, Island Princess, Maasdam, Nieuw Amsterdam and Seven Seas Mariner. Ships leaving Alaska include: Oosterdam, Pacific Princess, Jewel of the Seas, Statendam and 7 Seas Navigator. Additionally, Le Soleal will be taking visitors to new ports such as Barrow, Elfin Cove, Endicott Arm, Alert Bay, Petersburg, Misty Fjords and Icy Bay. This summer, cruisers can also enjoy two new cruise ship docks: the floating dock at Icy Strait Point and Juneau’s first of two new Panamax docks, capable of handling a 1,000-foot ship.
