Welcome to ECG's monthly newsletter, providing insights and advice about all things HR!
March 2016

In just one more month, we will be saying goodbye to winter, and hello to spring! Goodness how this year is already flying by…

As we will be springing ahead soon, now is a great time to begin planning your employee relations events. An Easter Egg Hunt – an Employee Picnic – a few Teambuilding Exercises or even a Management Outing. Creating an environment of happiness and camaraderie; or getting to know your employees a little bit better can make all the difference. You don’t have to spend a lot of money – these ER activities can be done on very small budgets… If you’d like some more ideas, or if you need us to facilitate these events, feel free to call us anytime!

We have had the pleasure of being associated with ABS Payroll Services since 2013. We have assisted ownership with a variety of different human resources services such as interviewing skills techniques and training to conducting a full employee opinion survey to gauge the employee sentiments and assist with employee relations. Mr. Kevin King and his son Kristofer are wonderful leaders who take pride in what they do. Their staff is friendly and dedicated to customer service. It is an honor to work with both these gentlemen, and with the entire ABS Payroll staff.

About ABS Payroll

ABS Entertainment Payroll and Production Accounting Services have been providing production companies and entertainment clients with full-service accounting since 1985. Different from some of the other Hollywood payroll companies who only want "large accounts", their company was founded on helping the smaller, independent filmmaker. As such, ABS is known as the "The Independent Filmmaker's Choice."® Catering to the independent filmmaking community is what they are all about.

ABS is the first payroll company in the industry to provide payroll services for the "original" reality show "The Real World" 20 years ago. Of all the payroll companies in the industry, Bunim-Murray Productions chose ABS as its payroll and accounting services provider. ABS also provides complete production accounting, corporate accounting, as well as office and staff payrolls.

Our Business Partner - AFFLUENCER FINANCIAL

Certified Financial Planners

Studies show that financial stress can be the leading cause of employee’s poor performance. When was the last time you educated your employees on their financial future? No, I am not talking about your 401k provider speaking about investment options… I am talking about true financial education from a UCLA instructor.

ECG has partnered with UCLA instructor and Certified Financial Planner Mr. Samul Rad, in order to provide complimentary educational workshops for employees and employers; educating them on all things financial. He teaches topics such as:

  • When is the best time to retire?
  • When should I take Social Security income?
  • Is it a good time to purchase a home?
  • Will I need to worry about long term care?
  • Are all of my investments the right ones for me?
  • Do I need a will and trust?

We have found Sam to be personable, creative and most of all simple in his explanation of complex matters. His workshops are fantastic! We are honored to be associated with Mr. Rad and his company, Affluencer Financial.

Highlights from our blog:

Investigations of harrassment and/or discrimination. When an employer receives a complaint of alleged harassment or discrimination, they are required by law to conduct an internal investigation. If any employee addresses issues of harassment or discrimination, employers should take the matter seriously and not have it overlooked. Learn more.

Equal pay - equal work. It's the law! Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 358, effective January 1, 2016, which strengthens the existing equal pay laws from 1949. The existing law didn’t eliminate the wage gap as men still earned more money than women for performing the same or similar work. Learn more.

Posting required notices and posters in the workplace. Posters may not be pretty; nor may they fit with your "Décor," but it's the law! Failure to post legal notices could result in a fine of $10.000.00. Employers are required to place legal notices and posters in areas which are easily accessible to all employees. Failure to comply with these regulations goes against the law and can result in a hefty fine. Read more.

It's time to post your OSHA summary. The Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses Summary - Form 300A must be posted from February 1 to April 30 of each year. The form summarizes the recordable work-related injuries and illnesses that occurred at your organization during the previous calendar year. Please make sure that you post the “Summary ONLY”. Learn more.
