E Tipu e Rea
A Better Start’s Māori name, E Tipu e Rea, means “grow and branch forth.” It is the opening phrase of a passage written in a schoolgirl’s autograph book in 1949 by Māori leader and scholar Sir Āpirana Ngata, of Ngāti Porou, to express his vision for Māori youth.

We're up & running

Challenge Launch
Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce has officially launched A Better Start, calling it “a massively important piece of work.”

We have up to $34.7 million in government funding over up to 10 years to find better ways to predict, prevent and treat obesity, learning and mental health problems in children and teenagers.

We’re enormously grateful to Tamaki College, which hosted our launch on their marae in the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes on Friday 19 February, 2016.

A Better Start
The Challenge partners are the host, the Liggins Institute at the University of Auckland, along with the University of Canterbury, the University of Otago, Auckland University of Technology, the University of Waikato, Massey University, Victoria University of Wellington and AgResearch Limited.

In coming updates, we’ll introduce you to the members of our board, and to our advisors.
