QUEENSLAND CELEBRATES FEMALE FOOTBALL WEEK
Football Queensland last week celebrated the role of women and girls in the game with the inaugural Female Football Week, a national initiative held simultaneously across Australia.

Activities in the Sunshine State included multiple AIA Vitality MiniRoos 'Come and Try' days for girls, junior carnivals, gala days and a 'Coach the Coach' session with Brisbane Roar Women's Belinda Wilson.

Each event - in addition to photos published to Football Queensland's Facebook page - have been in acknowledgement of the influence females have in making the game great.

FQ also profiled four members across playing, coaching, refereeing and administration as part of a feature series highlighting high achievers. Read them here:
BELINDA WILSON PRAISES PLAYER PATHWAY
Brisbane Roar Women’s coach Belinda Wilson believes an early grounding in professionalism is behind the heavy presence of Queenslanders in the Westfield Matildas squad.

An incredible 1o Sunshine State products represented Australia at the recent Rio 2016 qualifiers in Japan, where the Matildas sealed their spot at a first Olympic Games in 12 years.

That achievement was supported by a consistent pipeline of talent from the Queensland Academy of Sport which Wilson – who heads up the Women’s program – says sets a high standard.

“To have so many players who have come through the program representing Australia at the highest level is quite significant and shows how powerful the program can be,” Wilson said.

TOP RECOGNITION FOR QUEENSLAND REFEREES
Queensland referees are continuing to make great achievements with local products Rachel Mitchenson (L) and Lara Lee (R) both recently recognised at high levels.

Rachel has been selected for the AFC’s Project Future Referee Development Program, a unique development program for Asia’s top emerging officials.

The former Football Queensland Referee of the Year follows in the footsteps of fellow Queensland referees Jarred Gillett, Alex King and Casey Reibelt.

Lara, meanwhile, has been announced as one of two selections for the 2016 National Officiating Scholarship (NOS).

The NOS is run by the Australian Sports Commission and focuses on the professional development of elite match officials through a series of workshops and mentoring programs.
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER APPOINTED FOR SWQ
Football Queensland has appointed experienced coach David Nugent to the role of Regional Development Officer for South West Queensland.

David has been coaching for 25 years and possesses a clear understanding of the local environment having lived in the South-West since 2001.

His appointment as RDO follows an identified need for greater coaching support, which was raised as a key community concern during the recent strategic governance review.

David will work primarily with the regional areas of South West Queensland in delivering coaching courses, developing pathways, mentoring community coaches and helping to enhance communication.

His role is designed to expand on the coach education currently provided in Toowoomba by SWQ Thunder FC.

"The vast majority of our coaches work in that community sector and do need support as much as possible," Nugent said. "I think the idea is a great one and it’s certainly going to be a good challenge. I’m looking forward to it."
FOOTBALL STRENGTHENS PRESENCE IN LOGAN
Football is set to boast an even greater identity in the City of Logan with Brisbane Roar and Football Brisbane this month announcing moves to the Logan Metro Sports Precinct.

Traditionally a rugby league stronghold, Logan is becoming a major hub for football following Football Queensland’s relocation to Meakin Park in 2014.

Logan City Deputy Mayor and Sport & Community Services Chair Russell Lutton welcomed the further presence of the sport.

“Football is the world game and right here in Logan we are home to people from 217 different cultures,” Cr Lutton said.

“We see this partnership as a natural fit for our residents, football in Queensland and the development of the game.

“This is joining the dots. This is joining it from the grassroots through Football Brisbane, Football Queensland to the Roar.”

CONTRIBUTE TO UQ'S STUDY OF HIP PAIN IN FOOTBALLERS
Do you have hip pain?

The University of Queensland is undertaking an exciting new study investigating hip pain in footballers and is seeking volunteers to participate.

Do you get hip pain when you …
  • Run
  • Side step
  • Kick
  • Squat
  • Get out of the car
  • Or sit for long periods?
If so, you may be eligible to take part in this new study looking at persistent hip pain in footballers. Hip and groin pain is a very common condition in footballers and this study hopes to identify the contributing factors that lead to the development and progression of this condition.

GOW-GATES LAUNCHES RISK MANAGEMENT APP
Running matchdays safely and efficiently has become even easier with the launch of Gow-Gates’ new Football Risk Management iPhone App for Affiliated Clubs.

The free App enables participants to identify, assess, quantify, manage and monitor risks on matchdays efficiently using their iPhone.

It has been created for clubs to quickly and easily complete the checklist and upload the information for central storage, removing the burden from club administrators on printing and storing physical checklists. The delivery of the checklist over the App enables greater functionality.

Key benefits included pre-loaded lists of Affiliated Clubs, GPS locations to pinpoint venues, the ability to add photographs of risks and the ease of keeping records (the app automatically saves and reports on the data entered by the clubs).
