Despite still waiting to hear the final decision of the PCC about the sale of the Irving Building, Magdalen Road Church continues to seek to have a positive impact on the local community. It was this motivation that led us to pursue the building in the first place, and we have valued your support and input throughout the process.
In particular, we’re grateful to the many people who completed our community survey last spring. Thanks to your input, we heard a range of local perspectives on the positives and negatives of life in East Oxford, and what activities and services might be most needed in the area.
Since then we’ve been able to get alongside and support a number of Syrian refugees who have recently landed in Oxford in the past six months. We have opened up our building as a place where English lessons can be given five days a week in the afternoons with one of members helping to teach the classes. These classes have blessed the families by helping them to grasp the English language a bit better in their first few months here. Two other members of the church have begun visiting these families in their homes once a week. We’ve also had a couple in the church open up their home to accommodate a Syrian family in the short term whilst they are looking for accommodation in Oxford. This has made a real and specific impact on this family and their welcome into our community.
We look forward to continuing to live among and support the diverse East Oxford community of which we are a part.
