From the Director's Desk

Good afternoon, everybody!

I hope Daylight Savings hasn't messed up your routines too much! Losing an hour of sleep is tough - a Facebook post I saw this weekend questioned why we don't "Spring Ahead" on Friday at 4 pm - we should keep that in mind for next year, don't you think? As much as I dislike setting the clock forward, it is nice to gain that extra sunlight at the end of the day.

With spring comes the sense of new beginnings and transitions. One thing I will always associate with spring is graduation. High school seniors count down the days before the commencement ceremony that names them Lake Mills Alumni, then spend the summer preparing to leave for college where they will set the stage for their life careers.

Unfortunately, many of those graduating seniors are not aware of the quality of jobs available here in our community, and believe they need to move to a large city after college to get the experience they seek as young engineers, entrepreneurs, mechanics, and more! NIACC Career Connections is hoping to put an end to that misconception. NIACC Career Connections works to connect students, educators, and business through relevant, work-based learning activities that foster deeper knowledge and understanding of careers and career pathways.

This is accomplished through job shadows, worksite tours, student internships, educator externships, and other strategic activities.  Currently, NIACC Career Connections' activities focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), critical infrastructure, commercial and residential construction, advanced manufacturing, bioscience, and information technology careers.  However, other career clusters and pathways can also be explored.

Businesses and Educators (including parents) interested in participating in ANY of these actives are encouraged to fill out this Interest Form, or head over to www.niacc.edu/Career-Connections for more information!

When educators and local businesses are in sync, it makes for an amazing learning experience: Students receive real world insight and are able to learn hands on, relating what they are learning in the classroom with the careers they may one day pursue. I hope to see strong interest in our community!

Have a great week, everybody!

Sincerely,

Cassie Johnson

Coloff Digital

In this day and age, it is virtually impossible to grow a business without the help of digital tools. Serving local businesses for nearly three years, Coloff Digital dedicates itself to helping clients reach new customers digitally, and converting those customers to loyal fans.

“We work with clients to develop a digital marketing plan involving multiple levels designed to increase brand awareness and ultimately generate more business,” said Weston Lohry, General Manager. “We offer web design and development, social media marketing, search marketing and email marketing.”

Coloff Digital is a family-owned business, established by Jim Coloff in 2013. Jim Coloff is also the owner of Coloff Media, the parent company to North Iowa Broadcasting, Cedar Valley Broadcasting, Delaware County Broadcasting, and Pilot Knob Broadcasting. Coloff Digital’s headquarters were placed at KIOW in Forest City.

Local businesses can turn to Coloff Digital for professional level marketing services and advice. Weston said his favorite part of the job is building custom websites for clients. "I love designing websites. I am able to meet all kinds of new people and develop solutions to help them succeed," he said.

Brittney Christianson, Project Manager, said her favorite aspect of the job is helping clients put together social media campaigns. "I enjoy blogging  about current trends and digital solutions for companies," she said. "I also like to write creative content for client social media campaigns. It is satisfying to see Facebook Fans convert into long-term customers."

Having a strong brand with loyal customers is an incredible accomplishment for businesses, especially small businesses, but it is not necessarily enough to produce growth. “Each business should have an online presence that reflects the hard work they’ve put into building their brand. Businesses need strong social media presences to stand-out and reach customers who are online. We try to find the right audience for our clients and help them develop campaigns that will reach their desired target market and get them to interact with a post or offer,” said Brittney.

Coloff Digital is faced with countless misconceptions opposing online marketing; they are often told “it’s too time-consuming,” or “everybody already knows I’m here." Educating business owners on the outweighing benefits of going digital continues to be their response to such statements. “We try to show our customers the bigger picture and provide them with long-term goals and objectives that will help keep loyal, as well as new, customers coming through their doors,” said Brittney. “If you have online visibility, your customers have access to the right information at the right time across all devices.”

Do you need help with forming an online presence? Are you wondering how you can create a new website, start a blog, or turn those Facebook fans into loyal customers? How about all of the above? Give the Coloff Digital team a call!
