Rail safety update

It’s been nearly three years years since the rail tragedy in Lac-Mégantic claimed 47 lives but meaningful change to ensure safe, transparent, and regulated rail in Canada  has not yet occurred.

Despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau giving Transport Minister Marc Garneau the task to review the issue there has been little to indicate that the government will soon overhaul the system that allows railways to regulate themselves.  In fact, the March 22 budget might further trim the budget of Transport Canada, which provides oversight.

Spring clean up details

Date: Saturday March 26
Meeting point: Hardy’s Corners at 10:00 a.m.
Time estimate: 1 hour.

Bring gardening gloves, a rake, garbage bags and leaf bags and we will tackle what the winter has left behind in the Pump. When the egg hunt happens the next day, our kids can enjoy a lovely clean park! Coffee and treats for all! If tackling other areas interests you, such as laneways, the parking lot parkette or the rail bridge park area, please do! We are all keen to help. The satisfaction of making our public spaces beautiful cannot be underestimated.

Easter egg hunt details

Date: Sunday, March 27, 2016
Meeting point: The entrance to the pathway to the park (i.e. Hardy's Corner). Children please arrive by 10 a.m. at the very latest.  Released for the egg hunt at one time, in the past it has taken our speedy kids approximately 15 minutes to gather the eggs, so please arrive on time to ensure your child will not miss out.

If you would like to participate, please let Hanna Steenland know. If you know of any new families to the neighbourhood or any children who are visiting families in the neighbourhood, please welcome them to join us. Email Hanna to get on the update list.

To participate, donate some small chocolate eggs or stickers or small items that are nut free and place them in plastic eggs. Please include 10 for each child in your family who is participating. Families can drop off the pre-packaged eggs at the Potocnik house (27 McMaster Ave) any time up to 9:00 am on Sunday March 27th and/or assist in hiding the eggs at the park at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 27th. If you do not have plastic egg shells and wish to borrow some, please pop by the porch at 27 McMaster and help yourself to 10 plastic egg shells per child (while quantities last).

Annual General Meeting details

Date: Thursday May 5
Meeting point: 18 McMaster Ave at 6:30 p.m.

This is a Rathnelly Day skip year but the next one marks our 50th anniversary so stay tuned for meeting notices as we ramp up to plan this big event! After much consideration a decision was made not to have a yard sale this year but to focus our attention on making the AGM a great community event. Val Davey and Chris Mueller have kindly offered to host at their lovely home. It all starts with a get together and then the formal meeting follows, including presentations from elected members of government and a RARA update. Details on a special guest to come! The formal meeting should be over by 8:30 and then more social time will follow. So mark your calendar and be sure to come. It will be great fun, you won’t want to miss it. Democracy in action.

Recap of the Winter Solstice parade

RATHNELLY LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT PARADE HELD ON MONDAY, DEC 21ST 2015 WAS A FANTASTIC SUCCESS!!

On the longest night of the year, about 75 Rathnelly Republicans gathered to light up the night with lanterns and song.  Kids and adults alike dressed up for a warm winter’s parade with several exciting stops along the way with yummy things to eat and drink! We are deeply grateful to the Pat and John Hardy, Rob and Selena Cameron, Claire and CJ Hervey, Simon and Mel Foster, Simon Williams and Maggie Rosengarten, and Alice Prodanou and Geoff Cher for their remarkable generosity. And finally a huge thank you to Nichole Anderson for hosting a lantern making workshop at her studio and for organizing this lovely event.

Website refresh

A small but mighty team of neighbours is working to improve our website so stay tuned. Our goal is to not only have useful news and information plus historical stuff, but also integrate some e-commerce so that we can sell memberships, Rathnelly Day tickets, and branded items but also manage newsletter subscriptions, committee sign-ups and much more. The big reveal will be at the AGM so stay tuned.
